To evaluate the loss of lean mass in patients with burns using ultrasonography of the quadriceps muscle of the thigh. ⋯ Muscle loss occurred early and rapidly within the first seven days of hospitalization, reflecting the impact of burn injury on nutritional risk. An association was observed between muscle thickness loss and age, but no association was observed with the extent of burn, length of hospital stay, occurrence of health-related infections or mortality. These findings suggest the importance of monitoring muscle loss in these patients in planning nutritional therapy, early mobilization, and prevention of complications.

Depression has been associated with poorer postburn functional outcomes. However, whether or not certain burn specific coping strategies moderate the relationships remains unknown. Burn survivors from 2015 Formosa Fun Coast Water Park explosion were recruited in a 3-year follow-up study. ⋯ Depression was significantly and negatively correlated with quality of life at low and medium levels of optimism/problem solving but not high. Our study provided evidence supporting early identification and intervention of depression in burn survivors to optimize functional outcomes. Such knowledge may provide insights into potential targets in rehabilitation in depressed burn survivors.

Laser speckle contrast imaging, an alternative to laser doppler imaging in clinical practice of burn wound care derivation of a color code.
To develop a color code and to investigate the validity of Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) for measuring burn wound healing potential (HP) in burn patients as compared to the reference standard Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI). ⋯ This is the first study in which a color code for the LSCI in adult clinical burn patients has been developed. Our study reconfirms the good performance of the LSCI for prediction of burn wound healing potential. This provides additional evidence for the potential value of the LSCI in specialized burn care.

Aberrant biofunction of circular RNAs (circRNAs) is potently implicated in keloid formation. However, their roles have been underinvestigated. Recent evidence has demonstrated the pro-tumor role of circ_0000129 in cancers, and yet its role in keloid remains elusive. ⋯ All data generated or analyzed during this study are included in this article.

Although several studies have investigated models of nerve electrical injury, only a few have focused on electrical injury to peripheral nerves, which is a common and intractable problem in clinical practice. Here, we describe an experimental rat model of peripheral nerve electrical injury and its assessment. ⋯ We presented a model of peripheral nerve electrical injury that avoided the interference of various external factors, such as current instability, compression of the surrounding tissues, and altered blood supply. The model allowed quantitation and ranking of the nerve injury into four degrees. It facilitated effective evaluation of nerve function impairment and repair after injury. It can be used post-surgically to evaluate peripheral nerve impairment and reconstruction and enables translational interpretation of results, which may improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the progression of peripheral nerve electrical injury.
