Comparative Study
Assessment of cervical lymph node metastases using FDG-PET in patients with head and neck cancer.
To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) relative to computed tomography (CT) for detecting metastatic cervical lymph nodes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC), and to ascertain the factors that affect this accuracy. ⋯ FDG-PET is a useful tool for preoperative evaluation of the neck because it accurately detects metastatic lymph nodes > or =10 mm and has fewer false-positive cases than CT. The high specificity of FDG-PET for lymph node metastases may play an important role in avoiding unnecessary neck dissection.

Case Reports
Brown adipose tissue demonstrating intense FDG uptake in a patient with mediastinal pheochromocytoma.
We present an interesting case with a central mediastinal pheochromocytoma showing intense F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in tumor and systemic brown adipose tissue (BAT) mimicking metastases. The findings of hypertension and high plasma catecholamine concentration suggested the presence of pheochromocytoma. Mediastinal tumor showed intense FDG uptake and faint uptake of I-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine. ⋯ The mediastinal tumor was resected along with an adhesion to the left atrial wall and pathologically confirmed as pheochromocytoma. The plasma catecholamine concentration and blood pressure then reverted to normal. The FDG uptake in BAT disappeared after tumor resection.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dual-phase 99mTc-methoxyisobutylnitrile (MIBI) parathyroid scintigraphy (PS) and ultrasound (US) in primary (pHPT) and secondary (sHPT) hyperparathyroidism. ⋯ The concomitant of thyroid disease greatly influences scintigraphic and ultrasonographic detection of parathyroid pathology in pHPT and sHPT. The combination of MIBI and US appears promising for localizing parathyroid pathology in patients with both primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The concordance rate is high together with a lower chance of missing concomitant thyroid pathology, which might alter the surgical approach.

Staging of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) following lung transplantation is based on declines in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)). The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of (133)Xe ventilation scintigraphy in the early detection of BOS following living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT), to compare (133)Xe washout imaging with computed tomography (CT) findings for early detection of BOS following LDLLT, and to evaluate (133)Xe washout imaging by quantitative analyses. ⋯ Our data show that (133)Xe washout imaging offers excellent potential for early detection of BOS compared with early CT findings. Using (133)Xe washout imaging and MTT with radioactive tracer offers a noninvasive indication of selective ventilatory function in engrafted lungs following LDLLT. MTT appears useful for identifying BOS following LDLLT and allows quantitative evaluation of graft function in unilateral lungs.

There is much controversy about the correlation between the degree of 2-[(18)F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D: -glucose (FDG) uptake and clinical aggressiveness of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). In this study, we investigated whether partial volume corrected FDG uptake based on count recovery coefficient in 3D-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) correlates with the clinical aggressiveness of NHL and improves diagnostic accuracy. ⋯ Diagnostic accuracy of PVC-SUV was inferior to that of NC-SUV. These results suggest that NC-SUV, which contains information on both size and FDG density, provides better differentiation between aggressive and indolent NHLs than PVC-SUV.
