The new magnetic resonance whole body diffusion-weighted imaging with background body signal suppression (DWIBS) uses short tau inversion recovery-echo planar imaging sequence under normal respiration. DWIBS is different from 2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D: -glucose positron emission tomography ((18)F-FDG PET) imaging in technology, but their images are similar. We compared the two modalities regarding the detection and characterization of malignant tumors. ⋯ DWIBS can be used for the detection of malignant tumors or benign tumors; however, it may be difficult to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions by ADC.

Diagnosis of maxillofacial tumor with L-3-[18f]-fluoro-alpha-methyltyrosine (FMT) PET: a comparative study with FDG-PET.
To compare L-3-[18F]-fluoro-a-methyltyrosine (FMT)-positron emission tomography (PET) and 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG)-PET in the differential diagnosis of maxillofacial tumors. ⋯ Differential diagnosis of FMT-PET based on the uptake in maxillofacial tumors is equivalent to FDG-PET. However, the contrast of FMT uptake between maxillofacial tumors and the surrounding normal structures is higher than that of FDG, indicating the possibility of accurate diagnosis of maxillofacial tumors by FMT-PET.

The welding process produces metal fumes and gases which may affect respiratory health. Technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Tc-99m DTPA) dynamic lung scanning is an easy, noninvasive method to assess disorders of alveolar-capillary barrier permeability secondary to epithelial damage. We aimed to investigate the alveolar clearance by Tc-99m DTPA radioaerosol inhalation scintigraphy in welders, to assess additive effects of exposure to welding fumes and cigarette smoking on clearance rate of alveolar epithelium and to determine the correlation between Tc-99m DTPA aerosol lung scintigraphy and spirometric measurements. ⋯ Welding seems to decrease alveolar clearance which causes an increase in the penetration index. This was considered to be due to fibrotic changes and increased number of alveolar macrophages induced by welding fumes.

Meningeal extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare finding in idiopathic myelofibrosis. Intracranial EMH is typically asymptomatic and sites are usually found by chance. Diagnosis of EMH is difficult, based on clinical circumstances and the use of different diagnostic imaging modalities, such as CT, MRI or radionuclide imaging. ⋯ After gadodiamid injection, Tl weighted MRI showed diffuse contrast increased in the meningeal areas surrounding the brain. A biopsy of the mass revealed extramedullary hematopoiesis composed of erythroblasts, mature and immature myeloid cells, and megakaryocytes. It was deduced that these described foci of EMH.

Regional cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer's disease: comparison between short and long-term donepezil therapy.
Treatment with donepezil improves cognitive function of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) when compared to a placebo-controlled group. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of AD patients in short-term and long-term treatment with donepezil. ⋯ Relative rCBF significantly increased in the short-term donepezil therapy, while following the long-term therapy, rCBF decreased to the pre-treatment level.
