Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial
Technetium-99m-DTPA aerosol scintigraphy in amiodarone induced pulmonary toxicity in comparison with Ga-67 scintigraphy.
Amiodarone hydrochloride, which is used in life-threatening cardiac tachyarrhythmia, has been known to cause amiodarone induced pulmonary toxicity (AIPT) as a complication. In this study we aimed to investigate the clinical value of technetium-99m diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) aerosol lung scintigraphy in patients with AIPT in comparison with gallium-67 (Ga-67) scan. The study group included 26 cases, 7 patients with diagnosis of AIPT (Group A), 8 patients receiving amiodarone therapy but without AIPT (Group B) and 11 healthy subjects as a control group (Group C). ⋯ Early changes in Tc-99m-DTPA clearance may be observed in patients receiving amiodarone. The kep value in patients with AIPT is noticeably increased with respect to the control group. With its favorable physical properties, low cost, lower radiation burden and its ability to be used as an objective measure for the pulmonary clearance rate, Tc-99m-DTPA aerosol scintigraphy appears to be promising in patients receiving amiodarone therapy.

We investigated the degree of Japan's contribution to the nuclear medical research in the last decade. Articles published in 1991-2000 in highly reputed nuclear medical journals were accessed through the MEDLINE database. The number of articles having affiliation with a Japanese institution was counted along with publication year. ⋯ Of the total number of articles (7,788), Japan's share of articles in selected nuclear medical journals was 11.4% (889 articles) and ranked 2nd in the world after the USA (2,645 articles). The recent increase in the share was statistically significant for Japan (p = 0.02, test for trend). Japan's share in nuclear medical research output is much higher than that in other biomedical fields.

Technetium-99m human immunoglobulin scintigraphy in patients with adhesive capsulitis: a correlative study with bone scintigraphy.
Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is a disorder that is characterized by shoulder pain and progressive limitation of both active and passive shoulder motion. Although the underlying pathological mechanisms of the disease are not well understood, the inflammatory reactions depending on the stage have been demonstrated histologically. The purpose of the study is to investigate the inflammatory changes that can be demonstrated with Tc-99m HIG in AC, and to determine the presence of correlations between scintigraphic findings and the clinical assessment. ⋯ This study indicates that there is a good correlation between Tc-99m HIG scan findings and clinical scores. Tc-99m HIG accumulation in the affected shoulder may be related to continuing inflammatory reaction to AC. Tc-99m HIG scan may be a noninvasive, complementary method for demonstrating continuing inflammatory changes and may help in staging the disease.

A 44-year-old male patient complaining of severe headache right after twisting his body during aerobic exercises in a swimming pool underwent In-111 DTPA radionuclide cisternography. Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was proved on the right side of T2 and T3 vertebrae. Cisternography after bed and conservative treatments demonstrated the disappearance of abnormal tracer accumulations. Radionuclide cisternography is of great value in diagnosing cerebral-spinal fluid leak and in evaluating the therapeutic effect.

Estimation of 99mTc-MAG3 clearance by single-sample methods and camera-based methods.
We compared single-sample methods, proposed by Russell et al. and Bubeck et al., and camera-based methods in calculating 99mTc-MAG3 clearance, and determined camera-based methods that provide estimates comparable to those measured by the Russell method. Twenty-one patients underwent 99mTc-MAG3 renal scintigraphy, and clearance was measured by the Russell method and Bubeck method. Various renogram parameters were determined based on the slope of the renogram and area under the renogram, and correlated with the clearance measured by the Russell method. ⋯ When camera-based clearance was predicted with the previous equation, it was lower than the result obtained by the Russell method in high function. In conclusion, there are systematic differences in 99mTc-MAG3 clearance calculated by different methods. The camera-based methods obtained in this study appear to facilitate comparison of results obtained by the Russell method and camera-based method.
