ReviewPresurgical Mapping of the Language Network Using Resting-state Functional Connectivity.
Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (resting-state fMRI) is a tool for investigating the functional networks that arise during the resting state of the brain. Recent advances of the resting-state fMRI analysis suggest its feasibility for evaluating language function. The most common clinical application is for presurgical mapping of cortex for a brain tumor or for resective epilespy surgery. In this article, we review the techniques and presurgical applications of resting-state fMRI analysis for language evaluation, and discuss the use in the clinical setting, focusing on planning for neurosurgery.

ReviewMagnetic Resonance Imaging of Pediatric Neurologic Emergencies.
Although computed tomography is often the first line of imaging in the emergency setting, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of increasing importance in the evaluation of central nervous system emergencies in the pediatric population. As such, it is necessary to understand the indications for which MRI may be necessary. This article reviews the unique pathophysiologic entities affecting the pediatric population and the associated MRI findings. Specifically, utility of emergent MRI and characteristic appearances of traumatic brain injury, traumatic spinal injury, nonaccidental trauma, arterial ischemic stroke, cerebral sinovenous thrombosis, stroke mimics, and central nervous system infections are described.

Like the brain, the spinal cord is subject to trauma, infection, ischemia, hemorrhage, and compression. Early diagnosis is the key to preventing significant morbidity in the form of permanent disability. MR imaging is the gold standard for assessing acute injury to the spinal cord, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues. In this article we systematically review the MRI findings in spinal cord trauma, ligamentous injury, epidural hematoma, epidural abscess, and metastatic disease.

ReviewArterial Spin Labeling Magnetic Resonance Perfusion for Traumatic Brain Injury: Technical Challenges and Potentials.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion, is a public health concern, as it affects over 1.7 million persons in the United States per year. Yet, the diagnosis of TBI, particularly mild TBI (mTBI), can be controversial, as neuroimaging findings can be sparse on conventional magnetic resonance and computed tomography examinations, and when present, often poorly correlate with clinical signs and symptoms. ⋯ Advanced imaging methodologies hold promise in improving the sensitivity and detectability of associated imaging biomarkers that might better correlate with patient outcome and prognostication, allowing for improved triage and therapeutic guidance in the setting of TBI, particularly in mTBI. This work will examine the defining symptom complex associated with mTBI and explore changes in cerebral blood flow measured by arterial spin labeling, as a potential imaging biomarker for TBI, and briefly correlate these observations with findings identified by single photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography imaging.

ReviewMagnetic Resonance Imaging of Sports Injuries Involving the Ankle.
Understanding of ankle injuries has evolved for the past few decades, influenced by capability to visualize ligaments, tendons, and bone marrow on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Natural history of injury progression, complications, and healing has also been characterized using MRI. Stress injury is particularly common at the ankle in athletes and "weekend warriors" alike. This article will discuss manifestations of ankle injury on MRI as well as associated findings that should be addressed.
