The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of food allergy in patients referred to our Allergy Unit and to evaluate the diagnostic methods used. ⋯ 1. The prevalence of food allergy in our sample was 9.1 %. 2. The foods most frequently involved in allergic reactions were fruits and tree nuts. 3. The most common symptoms were oral allergy syndrome, urticaria, and anaphylaxis. 4. Combining our questionnaire with in vivo tests allowed us to diagnose 75-96 % of patients with no food allergy and 95 % of food allergy patients.

The use of opioids as analgesics is becoming increasingly widespread, which may have repercussions in patients with urticaria or asthma, as these agents frequently cause adverse reactions. ⋯ In most patients, these reactions are not IgE-mediated. Consequently, SPT and IDR are of little diagnostic value, and controlled oral challenging with the suspect drug or with one of the non-histamine releasing agents should be used. The patch test is useful in occupational contact dermatitis.

Case ReportsLife-threatening facial edema due to pine caterpillar mimicking an allergic event.
Approximately 150 species of Lepidoptera have been described as causing damage to human skin. One of these species is the pine processionary caterpillar, which is responsible for dermatitis, contact urticaria, ocular lesions and rarely respiratory signs and anaphylactic reactions through IgE-mediated or non-IgE-mediated mechanisms. We report a pediatric case of severe orofacial edema mimicking an allergic reaction after ingestion of a pine processionary caterpillar; urgent airway intubation was required. ⋯ Although oral contact with a pine processionary caterpillar in the form of ingestion is rare, it may cause significant local reaction and airway compromise mimicking an allergic event. In this situation, early intubation to maintain airway patency is a life-saving measure.

Case ReportsErythema multiforme to amoxicillin with concurrent infection by Epstein-Barr virus.
The incidence of rashes following the intake of aminopenicillins during an acute episode of infectious mononucleosis is high, but severe cutaneous reactions as erythema multiforme or Stevens-Johnson syndrome are rare manifestations in childhood. ⋯ The interaction between an infectious agent (EBV) and amoxicillin could precipitate the severe skin reaction. Patch test and delayed intradermal reading with amoxicilllin were an useful tool for the diagnosis of the etiological agent in this reaction. The negative response to other beta-lactams, suggests that the aminobenzyl group of the side chain of amoxicillin plays a predominant role in this reaction.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffectiveness of nebulized furosemide added to nebulized salbutamol in children with acute asthma.
Nebulized furosemide has been shown to be protective against bronchoconstricting stimuli. ⋯ Adding nebulized furosemide to nebulized salbutamol in pediatric patients experiencing an acute asthma attack did not produce greater improvement in clinical (p = 0.3829) or spirometric (p = 0.3839) parameters than nebulized salbutamol alone.
