ReviewThe state of affairs of neurologic monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy in pediatric cardiac critical care.
The decreasing postoperative mortality in patients with congenital heart disease has enabled an increasing interest in preventing morbidity, especially from the central nervous system. Near-infrared spectroscopy, a noninvasive technology that provides an estimate of tissue oxygenation, has been introduced in the intensive care unit and has gained popularity over the last decade. This review aims to ascertain its ability to affect outcome. ⋯ In addition to additional corroborative trials from different centers, a critical question that remains to be answered is whether targeting cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy values, as part of goal-directed therapy protocols, can help to improve outcome overall.

Noninvasive respiratory support for neonates is growing in popularity as clinicians increasingly recognize the dangers of prolonged invasive ventilation. The purpose of this review is to critically evaluate the existing evidence for safety and efficacy of these modes of respiratory support in neonates. ⋯ The optimal forms of noninvasive respiratory support for neonates remain to be determined. Continued evaluation of these technologies with large, well-designed RCTs is warranted.

ReviewMedial patellofemoral ligament: anatomy, injury and treatment in the adolescent knee.
Traumatic and nontraumatic patellofemoral instability (PFI) in children and adolescents is a complex problem. It is determined by a large number of mechanical and pathomorphologic conditions, mainly seen in nontraumatic dislocations. ⋯ It is the goal of this overview to explain the pathoanatomy of PFI, the demanding clinical and radiological examinations and treatment options.

ReviewAddressing social determinants of health in the adolescent medical home.
To provide a framework for addressing the social determinants of health (SDH) in the adolescent medical home. ⋯ SDH should be incorporated into the routine adolescent healthcare. Screening tools and referral programs should be developed and evaluated in the adolescent population. Programs utilizing multidisciplinary team members would be effective in reaching adolescents and facilitating connections to resources.
