Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialGastric emptying in liver cirrhosis. The effect of the type of meal.
Contradictory reports have been published on gastric emptying in patients with liver cirrhosis. The differences have been attributed to differences in the innervation of the stomach or in the behaviour of the gastric wall. The type of test meal used may, however, have its importance. We looked for the role of the test meal in the assessment of gastric emptying in cirrhosis. ⋯ These data suggest that in patients with liver cirrhosis free of autonomic neuropathy and without portal hypertensive gastropathy or vascular antral ectasia, gastric emptying of liquid low calorie meals is accelerated. The gastric emptying of a semisolid meal richer in calories is normal. Thus, the physical and chemical properties of a meal are major determinants of gastric emptying and may account for the large divergence of results hitherto published on this topic.

Effect of glyceryl trinitrate on the sphincter of Oddi spasm evoked by prostigmine-morphine administration.
In this study the effect of glyceryl trinitrate on the prostigmine-morphine-induced sphincter of Oddi spasm was evaluated in nine female patients with sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia. ⋯ These results provide the first evidence of the effectiveness of glyceryl trinitrate on the morphine-induced sphincter of Oddi spasm in humans. Since glyceryl trinitrate is able to overcome even the drastic effect of morphine, it might be of relevance in the treatment of sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia.

Erosive duodenitis: prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and response to eradication therapy with omeprazole plus two antibiotics.
To study the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with erosive duodenitis (ED), the associated gastric histological lesions and their response to eradication therapy with omeprazole plus two antibiotics. ⋯ A high prevalence (100%) of H. pylori infection in patients with ED was observed. A 1-week twice daily therapy with omeprazole plus two antibiotics (clarithromycin plus amoxycillin or metronidazole) was very effective in H. pylori eradication, duodenal erosion healing, symptomatic improvement, and in disappearance of associated histological gastritis. These observations suggest that ED should be considered a variant form of duodenal ulcer disease and treated accordingly; that is, with H. pylori eradication therapy.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialBody composition at the bedside.
To evaluate the use of an inexpensive hand-held bioelectric impedance analysis machine which measures lean body mass, by technical comparisons against standard instruments and techniques (an in-house bioelectric impedance machine and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and by performing body composition analyses in groups of potentially malnourished patients. ⋯ In non-obese and thin adults, an accurate two-compartment (lean, fat) measurement of body composition can be made in 10 min by using an inexpensive, hand-held, bioelectric impedance analysis machine.

Case ReportsHydatid acute pancreatitis: a rare complication of hydatid liver disease. Report of two cases.
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is known to be a rare complication of hydatid disease. We present two cases of AP due to intrabiliary ruptured hydatid cysts of the liver. High serum and urine amylase levels and ultrasonographic findings, compatible with AP, were detected. ⋯ The patients were treated surgically with mainly omentoplasty. Recovery was uneventful. A diagnosis of AP should be kept in mind in patients with hydatid liver disease presenting with upper abdominal pain.
