Outcome of the Z-expandable metallic stent for Budd-Chiari syndrome and segmental obstruction of the inferior vena cava.
Treatment of segmental obstruction of the inferior vena cava (SOIVC) with Z-expandable metallic stents (Z-EMS) is controversial and data on long-term follow-up are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of the use of a Z-EMS for Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) patients with SOIVC. ⋯ These data suggest that Z-EMS implantation is an efficacious, safe, and curative approach for BCS with SOIVC because satisfactory long-term outcomes were achieved. Long-term follow-up is required to ascertain stent patency and hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence.

Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with fatty liver index, the index of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is gaining increased attention. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship of OSA with NAFLD defined by an elevated fatty liver index (FLI). ⋯ Our results suggest a positive association between the severity of OSA and NAFLD defined by an elevated FLI, which may serve as a good biomarker for detecting NAFLD in OSA patients.

Combination of preoperative platelet/lymphocyte and neutrophil/lymphocyte rates and tumor-related factors to predict lymph node metastasis in patients with gastric cancer.
Lymph node (LN) metastasis is widely accepted as a poor prognosis indicator in patients with gastric cancer. An accurate preoperative prediction of LN status is of crucial importance for the planning treatment. The aim of the present study was to assess the predictive value of the preoperative platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) and neutrophil/lymphocyte rates (NLR) on the LN metastasis in gastric cancer patients and to develop a new preoperative score system to predict LN metastasis. ⋯ Preoperative PLR and NLR are useful biomarkers to predict LN metastasis and the score system in our study may serve as a reliable instrument to predict LN metastasis in gastric cancer patients.

Examining predictors of healthcare utilization in youth with inflammatory bowel disease.
Traditional definitions of healthcare utilization (HCU) emphasize clinical visits and procedures. Clinic calls, an understudied form of HCU, occur with high frequency. Understanding and examining predictors of HCU, such as disease activity and parent distress, may help reduce overutilization. ⋯ Greater parent distress and disease activity together predicted HCU and clinic calls. Disease activity was the most salient predictor of calls, whereas parent distress was the most salient predictor of in-person HCU. Clinic calls should not be overlooked as a form of HCU, as communication that takes place outside of scheduled appointments utilizes resources and may indicate poorer disease control.

Association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease with bone mineral density and serum osteocalcin levels in Korean men.
Bone mineral density has been reported to negatively associate with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Osteocalcin, a bone formation marker and metabolic regulator, has been previously evaluated as the mediator between bone mineral density and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Herein, we aimed to investigate the correlations of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease with bone mineral density and serum osteocalcin levels in Korean men. ⋯ Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease negatively associated with right-hip bone mineral density and serum osteocalcin in Korean men. General population-based prospective studies evaluating the causal relationship between bone metabolism and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are needed, and the mechanism linking nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to bone mineral density beyond insulin resistance and osteocalcin should be evaluated in the future.
