Age-associated differences in the inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening by cyclosporine A.
Inhibiting mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening is a key protection of the myocardium from ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Here, we investigated age-associated differences in the ability of cyclosporine A (CsA) to protect the heart and to modulate mPTP opening during I/R injury in vivo and its opening induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitro. ⋯ mPTP regulation is dysfunctional in the aged myocardium and this could account for loss of cardioprotection with aging.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyPropofol 2 mg/kg is superior to propofol 1 mg/kg for tracheal intubation in children during sevoflurane induction.
Propofol has been used to facilitate tracheal intubation within a short time of sevoflurane induction without a muscle relaxant in children. We compared as the primary outcome the incidence of excellent intubating conditions after 8% sevoflurane and propofol 1 or 2 mg/kg. ⋯ Propofol 2 mg/kg during 8% sevoflurane induction resulted in a higher proportion of excellent intubating conditions compared with propofol 1 mg/kg.

Randomized Controlled TrialSniffing position combined with mouth opening improves facemask ventilation in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.
This study evaluates the influence of sniffing position combined with mouth opening on the effectiveness of facemask ventilation in paralyzed pediatric patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy during sevoflurane-N(2)O anesthesia. ⋯ Sniffing position combined with mouth opening improves V(Texp) and PIP values during facemask ventilation during sevoflurane-N(2)O anesthesia in paralyzed pediatric patients with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Randomized Controlled TrialIs a pre-anaesthetic information form really useful?
All patients should be fully informed about the risks and benefits of anaesthetic procedures before giving a written consent. Moreover, the satisfaction level may vary in proportion to the information given. We aimed to determine, in a single-blind randomized-controlled study, whether an information form given before the pre-anaesthetic consultation could improve perceived information, information gain and satisfaction level. ⋯ Our study suggests that an information form given before the pre-anaesthetic consultation enhances perceived information, information gain and satisfaction level.
