ReviewThe use of ultrasound-guided regional anaesthetic techniques in neonates and young infants.
Optimal pain therapy during the perioperative period or at the neonatal intensive care unit and subsequent reduced use of opioids and various sedative drugs is an important factor for patients care. The use of various regional anaesthetic techniques in experienced hands provides excellent pain relief and has the potency to reduce the requirement for perioperative mechanical ventilation. ⋯ The spectrum of indications for ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia in babies and infants are surgery, selective pain therapy and sympathicolysis. This review reflects an expert-based description of the most recent developments in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthetic techniques in babies and infants.

Observational StudyMedical care and organisation at the 2012 Roskilde Music Festival: a prospective observational study.
Music festivals, with a mix of music, alcohol and camping at the festival site combined with low hygiene, have become an integral part of society and attracts large numbers of guests. Our study was performed in order to increase the very limited knowledge on health-care issues and organisation of major music festivals. ⋯ Our study demonstrates that illnesses and injuries are frequent, although mostly minor, in this normally low-risk population consisting of primarily young and healthy guests. However, comparison with other recent events was difficult as only limited data have been published from other music festivals. Future festivals should publish similar data.

Hypothermia after cardiac arrest does not affect serum levels of neuron-specific enolase and protein S-100b.
We investigated the brain-derived proteins neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and protein S-100b (S-100b) in survivors of cardiac arrest who had either received therapeutic hypothermia (TH) or had not. ⋯ Additional application of TH was not associated with significant changes in serum levels of NSE and S-100b in comatose survivors of cardiac arrest, compared to those treated without TH.

End-of-life decisions, including limitation of life prolonging treatment, may be emotionally, ethically and legally challenging. Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS) are illegal in Norway. A study from 2000 indicated that these practices occur infrequently in Norway. ⋯ Forgoing life-prolonging treatment at the request of the family may be more frequent in Norway that the law permits. A very small minority of doctors has hastened the death of a patient, and most cases involved non-competent patients. Male doctors below 50 seem to have a more liberal end-of-life practice.

Short general anaesthesia induces prolonged changes in gene expression in the mouse hippocampus.
The long-term molecular changes in the central nervous system constitute an important aspect of general anaesthesia, but little is known about to what extent these molecular changes are affected by anaesthesia duration. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of short duration (20 min) general anaesthesia with isoflurane or avertin on the expression of 20 selected genes in the mouse hippocampus at 1 and 4 days after anaesthesia. ⋯ This study shows that some of the effects of short general anaesthesia on gene expression in the mouse hippocampus persist for at least 4 days.
