Validation of the Danish version of the Critical Care Pain Observation Tool.
Assessing pain in critically ill patients is a challenge even in an intensive care unit (ICU) with a no sedation protocol. The aim of this study was to validate the Danish version of the pain assessment method; Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) in an ICU with a no sedation protocol. ⋯ The Danish version of CPOT can be used to assess pain in critically ill patients, also when the ICU has a no sedation protocol. CPOT scores showed a good interrater reliability and correlates well with patient's self-reported pain.

Isocapnic hyperventilation shortens washout time for sevoflurane - an experimental in vivo study.
Isocapnic hyperventilation (IHV) is a method that fastens weaning from inhalation anaesthesia by increasing airway concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) during hyperventilation (HV). In an animal model, we evaluated a technique of adding CO2 directly to the breathing circuit of a standard anaesthesia apparatus. ⋯ In this experimental in vivo model of isocapnic hyperventilation, the washout time of sevoflurane anaesthesia was one-third compared to normal ventilation. The method for isocapnic hyperventilation described can potentially be transferred to a clinical setting with the intention to decrease emergence time from inhalation anaesthesia.

Reducing pre-operative fasting while preserving operating room scheduling flexibility: feasibility and impact on patient discomfort.
The need to preserve operating room (OR) scheduling flexibility can challenge adherence to the 2-h pre-operative fasting period recommendation before elective surgery. Our primary objective was to assess the feasibility of a pre-operative carbohydrate (CHO) drink delivery strategy preserving OR scheduling flexibility. ⋯ Although preservation of OR scheduling flexibility resulted in a longer fasting time than recommended, CHO drink can be made available to a large proportion of patients with significantly reduced perioperative discomfort.

Post-operative serious adverse events in a mixed surgical population - a retrospective register study.
The number of surgical procedures is increasing, and knowledge of surgical risk factors, post-operative mortality and serious adverse events (SAE) is essential. The aim with our study was to determine the risk of a composite outcome of post-operative: death; myocardial infarction; pulmonary embolism; stroke; gastrointestinal bleeding; dialysis or reoperation. ⋯ We found a risk of one or more events in the composite outcome within 342 days after inclusion of the last patients of 8.3% (7.8-9.0). The results are applicable in estimations of adequate sample sizes in future clinical trials investigating effects of interventions on SAEs.
