Randomized Controlled TrialThermal suit connected to a forced-air warming unit for preventing intraoperative hypothermia: a randomised controlled trial.
Inadvertent intraoperative hypothermia is a common occurrence in surgical patients. A thermal suit is an option for passive insulation. However, active warming is known to be more effective. Therefore, we hypothesised that a forced-air warming (FAW) unit connected to the thermal suit is superior to a commercial FAW blanket and a warming mattress in breast cancer surgery. ⋯ A thermal suit connected to a FAW unit was not superior to a commercial FAW blanket, although the incidence of intraoperative hypothermia was lower in patients treated with a thermal suit.

Observational StudyContinuous peripheral perfusion index in patients admitted to hospital wards - an observational study.
Risk patients admitted to hospital wards may quickly develop haemodynamic deterioration and early recognition has high priority to allow preventive intervention. The peripheral perfusion index (PPI) may be an indicator of circulatory distress by assessing peripheral perfusion non-invasively from photoplethysmography. We aimed to describe the characteristics of PPI in hospitalized patients since this is not well-studied. ⋯ Lower PPI during daytime vs evening and night-time were seen for both populations. The highest frequency of serious adverse events and mortality was seen among patients with low median PPI. The clinical impact of PPI monitoring needs further confirmation.

Mortality and major complications after emergency laparotomy: A pilot study of risk prediction model development by preoperative blood-based immune parameters.
Emergency laparotomy is associated with high risk of postoperative complications and mortality. Preoperative identification of patients at high risk of adverse outcome is important. The immune response to conditions requiring emergency laparotomy is not understood in detail. The present study describes preoperative blood-based immune profiles and their potential value in surgical risk assessment. ⋯ In emergency laparotomy, preoperative blood-based immune parameters added predictive power to regression models and could be considered in risk prediction model development.
