Clinical Trial Observational StudyThe effect of vasoconstriction on intestinal perfusion is determined by preload-dependency: a prospective observational study.
The effects of vasoconstriction on cardiac stroke volume (SV) and indices of peripheral and intestinal perfusion are insufficiently described. ⋯ The reflection of vasoconstrictive modulation of preload in systemic cardiovascular variables and indices of perfusion was dependent on preload responsiveness. Administration of phenylephrine to increase preload did not appear to compromise organ perfusion.

Observational StudyPatient characteristics, management and outcomes in a Nordic subset of the "Large observational study to understand the global impact of severe acute respiratory failure" (LUNG SAFE) study.
The "Large observational study to understand the global impact of severe acute respiratory failure" (LUNG SAFE) study described the worldwide epidemiology and management of patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF). Here, we present the Nordic subset of data from the LUNG SAFE cohort. ⋯ In this subset of LUNG SAFE, ARDS was often not recognised in patients with AHRF and management frequently deviated from evidence-based practices. ICU LOS was generally short, and mortality was attributable to known risk factors.

Association of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) components with mortality.
Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) is a practical method to describe and quantify the presence and severity of organ system dysfunctions and failures. Some proposals suggest that SOFA could be employed as an endpoint in trials. To justify this, all SOFA component scores should reflect organ dysfunctions of comparable severity. We aimed to investigate whether the associations of different SOFA components with in-hospital mortality are comparable. ⋯ All SOFA components are associated with mortality, but their weights are not comparable. High scores of other organ systems mean a higher risk of death than high cardiovascular scores. The scoring of cardiovascular dysfunction needs to be updated.

The Karolinska NeuroCOVID study protocol: neurocognitive impairment, biomarkers and advanced imaging in critical care survivors.
This is the study plan of the Karolinska NeuroCOVID study, a study of neurocognitive impairment after severe COVID-19, relating post-intensive care unit (ICU) cognitive and neurological deficits to biofluid markers and MRI. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed enormous health challenges to individuals and health-care systems worldwide. An emerging feature of severe COVID-19 is that of temporary and extended neurocognitive impairment, exhibiting a myriad of symptoms and signs. The causes of this symptomatology have not yet been fully elucidated. ⋯ The study goal is to gain a better understanding of the pathological mechanisms and neurological consequences of this new disease, with a special emphasis on neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory processes, in order to identify targets of intervention and rehabilitation.
