To investigate the characteristics of neonates presenting to a metropolitan Mixed Emergency Department (MED). To examine whether there are maternal and neonatal characteristics which increase the risk of presentation to the ED in the neonatal period. ⋯ The implications of these results for practice include a consideration of the availability and appropriateness of after-hours service available to new mothers. Further studies investigating parental reasons for neonatal ED presentation are recommended.

Outcome and recurrence in treatment of phimosis using topical betamethasone in children in Hong Kong.
To study the efficacy of treating phimosis with topical steroid, and its long-term outcome and side effects. We also looked into the effect of daily retraction and cleansing of prepuce on preventing recurrence of phimsosis. ⋯ Topical steroid is an effective and safe treatment for phimosis, especially when combined with a good hygiene practice of the foreskin with daily cleansing and retraction. A trial of topical steroid treatment should be offered upon considering circumcision.

A neonate requiring major surgery in 2006 has a greater prospect of survival than ever before. Increasingly, however, there is awareness that critical illness may affect later neurodevelopment. Pre-existing conditions in addition to the physiologic stresses associated with cardiac and general surgery are implicated but remain unavoidable in the case of significant structural abnormalities such as transposition of the great arteries or congenital diaphragmatic hernia. ⋯ Current research focuses on the preventable causes of brain injury, before, during and after the intervention, and the rate of impairment in apparently uncomplicated procedures. In contrast to the quantity of neurodevelopmental outcome data following cardiac surgery, there remain few outcome studies dealing with non-cardiac surgery despite such intervention being two to three times more common. There appear to be compelling clinical and economic arguments for the instigation of formalised population-based developmental assessments for all infants undergoing major surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffect of formula thickened with locust bean gum on gastric emptying in infants.
We investigated the effects of milk-based formulas thickened with two different concentrations of locust bean gum on gastric emptying in infants with recurrent regurgitation episodes. ⋯ HL-450, a thickened formula with typical commercially available concentrations of locust bean gum, slowed gastric emptying in infants with gastroesophageal reflux.

Caring for adolescents with mental health problems: challenges in the emergency department.
To explore management issues in adolescents with mental health problems who presented to a children's hospital emergency department (ED). ⋯ Adolescent mental health presentations to the ED require a high number of ED, mental health and inpatient service resources. Security incidents occur frequently. We propose changes to address identified problems. These include redesigning the physical structure of the ED, more mental health training and support for ED staff, better access to mental health records and crisis plans for adolescents at risk, and improved after-hours mental health services for children and adolescents.
