Comparative StudyComparison of kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty in the treatment of fresh vertebral compression fractures.
As life expectancy in the population rises, osteoporotic fractures are seen most frequently in the proximal femur and the vertebral column. In balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty, we have two minimally invasive treatment procedures available. Although they have both been controversially discussed in studies, they have seldom been directly compared. ⋯ The two surgical procedures were both followed by significant pain relief, and the quality of life was similar regardless of the procedure used. Balloon kyphoplasty led to an ongoing reduction of freshly fractured vertebrae and was followed by a lower rate of cement leakage.

Case ReportsNew technique for knee flexion contracture with patella infera using patellar tendon reconstruction combined with anterior capsular shift: a case report.
A 24-year-old male presented with an open fracture of the left patella (Gustilo-Anderson grade III-A) and fracture of the left femoral lateral condyle, and subsequent patella alta suggesting rupture of the left patellar tendon. This initial injury was treated 6 months earlier in another hospital. He was referred because of limited knee motion and radiographs showed severe patella infera. By means of a combination of a contralateral BTB graft and soft tissue repair named anterior capsular shift, the knee contracture with patella infera was resolved successfully.

Reconstruction of the proximal humerus with a composite of extracorporeally irradiated bone and endoprosthesis following excision of high grade primary bone sarcomas.
Functional reconstruction of the shoulder joint following excision of a malignant proximal humeral tumour is a difficult proposition. ⋯ Whilst the reconstructions were durable in the medium term, the functional outcome was no better than with other reported reconstructive methods. The composite technique was especially useful in subtotal humeral resections, allowing preservation of the elbow joint even with very distal osteotomy. Bone stock is restored, which may be useful for future revision surgery in this young group of patients.
