Preparation of gentamicin-loaded electrospun coating on titanium implants and a study of their properties in vitro.
Implant-related infections are disastrous complications in the clinic, and there are no effective therapies. In this preliminary study, gentamicin-loaded coating on titanium implants was prepared using the electrospinning technique, and some properties of the coating titanium implants were studied. ⋯ The gentamicin-coated titanium implants, which were prepared using an electrospinning technique, present many advantages and may be considered to prevent and treat the implant-related infections.

Postoperative stability on lateral radiographs in the surgical treatment of pertrochanteric hip fractures.
Fixed-angle sliding hip-screw devices are commonly used to treat pertrochanteric fractures. The controlled impaction between the head and neck fragment and the femoral shaft fragment is crucial. However, the poor quality of fracture reduction can intercept controlled impaction and lead to excessive sliding. We hypothesized that excessive sliding occurs when most of the impaction is placed on the fragile posterior cortex of the fracture site. ⋯ Excessive sliding occurs in surgical treatment for pertrochanteric fractures with posterior displacement of the head and neck fragment. In such cases, we recommend appropriate reduction prior to internal fixation.

Nociceptive sensory innervation of the posterior cruciate ligament in osteoarthritic knees.
Although the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is considered to contain not only proprioceptive but also nociceptive sensory fibers, there is a lack of information about nociceptive sensory innervation of the PCL. We hypothesized that the PCL has constant nociceptive sensory innervation, suggesting the possible source of osteoarthritic (OA) knee pain. ⋯ Our results showed that, in spite of a significant decrease in total innervation in OA knees, the PCLs have constant nociceptive sensory innervation. Although the relationship between the decrease in total innervations in the PCL and OA pathophysiology is still unclear, the PCL is the possible source of OA knee pain. Our results should be taken into account when examining the pain source of the OA knees and handling the PCL during total knee arthroplasty.

Arthroscopic three dimensional autologous chondrocyte transplantation with navigation-guided cartilage defect size assessment.
The treatment of large full thickness cartilage defects with matrix guided autologous chondrocyte transplantation shows promising results. However, in many cases an arthrotomy is needed to implant the cell seeded scaffolds. Recently techniques have been developed for arthroscopically guided ACT implantation. Correct defect mapping, to assess size and depth of the chondral lesions, and precise scaffold preparation and fixation are crucial for successful chondrocyte transplantation and remain to be not sufficiently optimized. ⋯ The study showed the feasibility of an arthroscopic implantation of scaffolds for autologous chondrocytes transplantation. Navigation was a useful tool to exactly assess the cartilage defect geometry and allowed a precise transfer of navigated cartilage defect geometries for individualized scaffold preparation. Navigation can help to accomplish and optimize arthroscopically guided chondrocyte transplantations.
