Outcome after severe brain trauma associated with epidural hematoma.
The aim of this study was to identify factors contributing to outcomes after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) associated with epidural hematoma (EDH). ⋯ Of the 738 patients with severe TBI 159 (21.5 %) had EDH. Of these, 49 (30.8 %) died in the hospital, 21 (13.2 %) survived with unfavorable outcome, 82 (51.6 %) with favorable outcome; long-term outcome was unknown in 7 survivors (4.4 %). Mortality rates predicted by the Rotterdam score showed good correlation with observed mortality rates. According to the Hukkelhoven scores, observed/predicted ratios for mortality and unfavorable outcome were 0.94 and 0.97, respectively. Age, severity of TBI, and neurological status were the main factors influencing outcomes after severe TBI associated with EDH. We were unable to demonstrate significant effects of treatment factors.

Case ReportsShortening spinal column reconstruction through posterior only approach for the treatment of unstable osteoporotic burst lumber fracture: a case report.
Case report. ⋯ Shortening reconstruction procedure through only posterior approach is a viable option in treating unstable osteoporotic fracture as well as post-traumatic fractures. Using non-expandable cage is advocated to avoid cage subsidence.

Open arthrolysis and hinged external fixation for posttraumatic ankylosed elbows.
An ankylosed elbow is defined as an elbow having a range of motion of 0°. Movement is extremely limited. This study retrospectively analyzes the results of arthrolysis and hinged external fixation performed on 15 patients suffering from ankylosed elbows. ⋯ Open arthrolysis and monolateral hinged external fixation are effective in treating posttraumatic ankylosed elbow. Arthrolysis should be performed by a combination of lateral and medial approaches. In addition, routine hinged external fixation and anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve may improve the postoperative recovery of elbow stiffness.

Intraoperative soft tissue tension and postoperative range of motion in posterior stabilized total knee arthroplasty.
Intraoperative soft tissue tension can significantly impact the range of motion following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the level of impact remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between intraoperative soft tissue tension and postoperative range of motion. ⋯ We did not observe a correlation between intraoperative soft tissue tension adjusted from 80 to 160 N and 1-year postoperative range of motion in posterior stabilized TKA.

Valgus osteotomy in combination with dynamic hip screw fixation for fibrous dysplasia with shepherd's crook deformity.
The treatment of fibrous dysplasia with shepherd's crook deformity is a big challenge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of valgus osteotomy in combination with dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation to treat fibrous dysplasia with shepherd's crook deformity. ⋯ Our results demonstrate that valgus osteotomy in combination with DHS internal fixation is an easy and effective method for the treatment of fibrous dysplasia with shepherd's crook deformity. It can restore the neck-shaft angle and re-establish the mechanical alignment of the femur to improve function.
