Comparative StudyResults of operative treatment for recalcitrant retrocalcaneal bursitis and midportion Achilles tendinopathy in athletes.
The results of operative treatment for recalcitrant midportion Achilles tendinopathy and recalcitrant retrocalcaneal bursitis were evaluated using the patient administered, disease specific, and validated VISA-A-G questionnaire. ⋯ Retrocalcaneal bursitis and midportion Achilles tendinopathy responded equally well to operative treatment. When repaired, additional tendon lesions did not influence this result. We demand to differentiate not only between midportion Achilles tendinopathy and retrocalcaneal bursitis but also to identify additional Achilles tendon lesions to specifically address these lesions during operative procedures.

Comparative StudyResults of surgical treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy in patients aged 75 years or more: a comparative study of operative methods.
The number of surgical procedures in elderly patients has been increasing as the population has grown older; recently, spine surgeons have been more likely to encounter elderly patients with cervical myelopathy in need of surgical treatment. There are many reports about surgical treatment of elderly patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM); however, there are no studies about the proper selection of surgical methods and comparison of their results in CSM patients aged ≥ 75 years. The objective of this study was to review the results of operative methods in CSM patients aged ≥ 75 years. ⋯ Selective laminoplasty is less invasive and the surgical results in our study were almost good. It also has good short-term results. However, the indication for surgery has to be selected carefully in elderly CSM patients.

How does reverse shoulder replacement change the range of motion in activities of daily living in patients with cuff tear arthropathy? A prospective optical 3D motion analysis study.
Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) can improve function in cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) shoulders, but limited exact data are available about the maximum values in 3D motion analysis, and as to how improvements translate into the normal range of motion (ROM) in activities of daily living (ADLs). ⋯ RSA improves the active maximum ROM for flexion, abduction, and adduction. The patients are able to take advantage of this ROM increase in ADLs in flexion and in most ADL in abduction, but only in trend in internal and external rotation.

Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis of the distal medial femur: MPFL in danger.
Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis (TH) with plate fixation is a well-accepted and common treatment for correcting leg malalignment in skeletally immature patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate any soft tissue damage caused during TH at the distal medial femur with a plate and two screws. We hypothesized that correct plate placement can affect the integrity of the medial stabilizing structures of the knee, especially the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL) or result in arthrotomy of the knee joint itself. ⋯ Standard plate placement during TH on the distal medial femur frequently leads to damage to the MPFL, impingement of the MPFL, the capsular and synovial tissues or exposure of the knee joint.

Comparative StudyComparative study of the femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) prevalence in male semiprofessional and amateur soccer players.
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) represents a novel approach to the mechanical etiology of hip osteoarthritis. The cam-type femoroacetabular impingement deformity occurs frequently in young male athletes. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of FAI in male semiprofessional soccer players using clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), compared to amateur soccer players. In MRI, the α angle of Nötzli is determined for quantifying FAI. ⋯ Semiprofessional players have a higher prevalence of an increased α angle in the kicking leg than the amateur group at the same age. The kicking leg is predisposed for FAI.
