Mechanical thromboprophylaxis would suffice after total knee arthroplasties in Asian patients?
Our prospective study evaluated the incidence and location of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the risk factors for PE and the natural history of DVT after TKA in patients who have received only mechanical compression device without having any chemical thromboprophylaxis or therapeutic treatment. ⋯ We concluded that the combinations of absent thrombophilic polymorphisms with low clinical prothrombotic risk factors led to low prevalence of DVT and virtually absent PE after TKA in the current series of patients, who had received mechanical compression device only without chemical thromboprophylaxis.

Short-term results of a second generation anatomic short-stem shoulder prosthesis in primary osteoarthritis.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term clinical results of anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty with a short-stem prosthesis in primary osteoarthritis. ⋯ In the short term, the clinical results of this anatomical short-stem shoulder prosthesis are encouraging. A low prevalence of high bone adaptations was found without any influence on the clinical outcome and stem loosening was not observed.

Glenoid and rotator interval dimension in patients older than 40 years after traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation.
The number of patients above 40 years suffering an anterior shoulder dislocation for the first time has recently increased. This study investigated the role of glenoid version, inclination and rotator interval dimension in patients older than 40 years with an anterior shoulder dislocation. We hypothesize that the rotator interval plays a more important role than the osseus alignment in older patients. ⋯ In patients older than 40 years who have suffered anterior shoulder dislocation, the shape of the glenoid rather than its spatial position is of significance. A wide and high rotator interval promotes anterior shoulder dislocation in these patients.

Risk factors associated with non-union after triple pelvic osteotomy (Toennis and Kalchschmidt technique): a case-control study and review of the literature.
Dysplasia of the hip is a well known cause of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip. The triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO), according to the technique described by Toennis and Kalchschmidt, is a well established procedure to address dysplasia of the hip joint. Non-unions after triple pelvic osteotomies are rare and can occur at each of these osteotomies. The literature is lacking in studies investigating larger group of patients with non-unions after triple pelvic osteotomy. The aim of this study is to evaluate risk factors leading to a non-union after triple pelvic osteotomy. ⋯ Non-unions after TPO are rare. A higher age and higher degree of surgical correction might be associated risk factors for developing a non-union. Furthermore, smoking, obesity and previous hip surgeries might also contribute to developing a non-union after triple pelvic osteotomy.

The accuracy of digital templating in uncemented total hip arthroplasty.
Preoperative planning is an essential part of total hip arthroplasty (THA). It facilitates the surgical procedure, helps to provide the correct implant size and aims at restoring biomechanical conditions. In recent times, surgeons rely more and more on digital templating techniques. Although the conversion to picture archiving and communication system had many positive effects, there are still problems that have to be taken into consideration. ⋯ Inexperience and overweight are factors that correlate with inaccuracy of preoperative digital templating in femoral components, whereas acetabular components seem to be independent of these factors.
