Burden of knee osteoarthritis in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): an epidemiological analysis from 1990 to 2019.
Knee is the most affected joint in osteoarthritis (OA) and accounts for almost four-fifths of the burden of OA globally. We aimed to explore the prevalence, incidence, trends, and burden of knee OA during 1990-2019 in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study data. ⋯ The prevalence of and YLDs due to knee OA in MENA has escalated over the last three decades. Considering the expanding burden of knee OA in MENA, policymakers should be more concerned to implement preventive strategies.

The influence of distribution, severity and volume of posttraumatic bone bruise on functional outcome after ACL reconstruction for isolated ACL injuries.
Posttraumatic MRI of ACL tears show a high prevalence of bone bruise (BB) without macroscopic proof of chondral damage. Controversial results are described concerning the association between BB and outcome after ACL tear. Aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of distribution, severity and volume of BB in isolated ACL injuries on function, quality of life and muscle strength following ACL reconstruction (ACLR). ⋯ No impact of BB after ACLR on function, quality of life and objective muscle strength was shown, unaffected by concomitant pathologies. Previous data regarding prevalence and distribution is confirmed. These results help surgeons counselling patients regarding the interpretation of extensive BB findings. Long-time follow-up studies are mandatory to evaluate an impact of BB on knee function due to secondary arthritis.

Surgical treatment of ankle instability in children with os subfibulare.
Ankle instability in children due to soft tissue injury usually resolves after non-operative treatment. However, some children and adolescents with chronic instability require surgical treatment. A rarer cause of developing ankle instability is injury to the ligament complex in the presence of os subfibulare, an accessory bone inferior to the lateral malleolus. The aim of this study was to assess the results of operative management of chronic ankle instability in children with os subfibulare. ⋯ Ankle joint sprain with associated injury to os subfibulare complex can lead to chronic instability in children. If conservative management fails, then surgical treatment with modified Broström-Gould technique and excision of accessory bone is a safe and reliable method.

What enhances the in-hospital mortality following total hip arthroplasty? A national inpatient sample-based study.
With prolonged life expectancy and advancements in prosthetic designs, the proportion of patients belonging to diverse age groups undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) has progressively increased. In this context, the details regarding risk factors associated with mortality after THA, and its prevalence need to be clearly understood. This study sought to identify the possible co-morbidities associated with post-THA mortality. ⋯ THA is a safe surgery with low mortality rate during early post-operative period. Cirrhosis, CKD, and previous history of organ transplant were the most common co-morbidities associated with post-THA mortality. Among post-operative complications, ARF, PE, pneumonia, MI, and prosthetic dislocation substantially enhanced the odds of post-THA mortality.

Satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcomes following revision total hip arthroplasty by direct anterior approach using primary femoral stems at 2-8 years of follow-up.
To report clinical and radiographic outcomes of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) through the direct anterior approach (DAA) using primary stems. ⋯ Revision THA performed through the DAA using primary stems grants satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcomes at a minimum follow-up of two years.
