True "outpatient discharge" following single-stage bilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty may be unrealistic for most.
Single-stage bilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (BUKA) has shown post-operative function and cost benefits over staged bilateral procedures, without increased complications. A rapid discharge protocol at the current study site has reported outpatient discharge for the unilateral procedure exceeding 97%. However, the feasibility of outpatient discharge following BUKA remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the success of achieving outpatient (< 24 h) discharge following BUKA, and identify patient variables associated with failure. ⋯ III, Case-control study; Retrospective comparative study.

Osteoscopic versus open surgery for the treatment of enchondroma in the foot.
The conventional treatment of enchondromas is the open surgery with curettage of lesions. Osteoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive endoscopic approach for lesions inside bone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the osteoscopic surgery in comparison with the conventional open surgery for patients with foot enchondromas. ⋯ The osteoscopic surgery is feasible to provide earlier functional recovery and fewer complications than the open surgery.

Early radiographic osseointegration of a novel highly porous 3D-printed titanium collar for megaprostheses compared to a previous generation smooth HA-coated collar.
Extracortical osseointegration at the collar-bone interface of megaprostheses is associated with improved implant stability, lower rates of stem fracture and loosening. The use of hydroxy-apatite (HA-) coated collars showed mixed results in previously published reports. A novel collar system has recently become available utilizing additive manufacturing technology to create a highly porous titanium collar with a calcium-phosphate coated surface. The aim of this study was to evaluate our early experience with this novel collar and compare it to the previously used HA-coated model. ⋯ These results indicate more reliable and accelerated osseointegration at the bone-collar interface of a novel highly porous collar system compared to a previously used HA-coated collar. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Cartilage repair strategies in the knee according to Dutch Orthopedic Surgeons: a survey study.
This study surveyed Dutch orthopedic surgeons on the management of cartilage defects in the knee and the adherence to the recently updated Dutch knee cartilage repair consensus statement (DCS). ⋯ Small cartilage defects in ideal patients may be well treated by general orthopedic surgeons. The matter becomes complicated in older patients, or in case of larger defects or malalignment. The current study reveals some knowledge gaps for these more complex patients. Referral to tertiary centers might be indicated, as is stated by the DCS, and this centralization should enhance knee joint preservation. Since the data from present study are subjective, registration of all separate cartilage repair cases should fuel objective analysis of clinical practice and adherence to the DCS in the future.

Reproducibility of Bartoníček and Haraguchi classifications of the posterior malleolus fractures.
Two of the most commonly used classifications for the posterior malleolus fracture are Haraguchi and Bartoníček. Both classifications are based on the morphology of the fracture. This study makes an inter- and intra-observer agreement analysis of the mentioned classifications. ⋯ IV.
