Complications following single-stage bilateral total knee arthroplasty and unilateral procedures: experience of a high-volume community hospital.
The safety of single-stage bilateral total knee arthroplasty (SSBTKA) compared to unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. The present study compares the 90-day postoperative complications encountered following SSBTKA and unilateral TKA in an unselected cohort of patients performed at a high-volume community hospital. ⋯ SSBTKA did not result in greater complications when compared to unilateral TKA in this particular cohort. As expected, transfusion rates will likely be higher and there will be a greater need for acute inpatient care following surgery for SSBTKA patients.

Effect of hardware removal and second-look arthroscopy after open-wedge high tibial osteotomy.
Open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) is the standard and safe procedure for medial compartment osteoarthritis. Although hardware removal (HWR) is performed after post-OWHTO bone union, the effects of HWR on OWHTO have been rarely reported. We hypothesised that HWR would improve range of motion (ROM) and implant-related complications. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of HWR on postoperative ROM, the Japan Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score/visual analogue scale (VAS) score and hardware-related complications after OWHTO. ⋯ HWR improves flexion angle, clinical outcomes and hardware-related complications after OWHTO. Preoperative KL grade and flexion angle are predictors of improvement after HWR in patients who have undergone OWHTO.

Follow-up study of isolated calf muscular vein thrombosis for anticoagulant therapy after primary hip and knee arthroplasty.
Although isolated calf muscular vein thrombosis (ICMVT) is commonly seen after hip and knee arthroplasty, no treatment guidelines for ICMVT after joint replacement are available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients with ICMVT for anticoagulant therapy at different time points after primary hip and knee arthroplasty. ⋯ Our findings provide new insights into the anticoagulant therapy for ICMVT after primary hip and knee arthroplasty, taking oral Rivaroxaban for 3 months is effective and safe, which contributes to provide the reference for clinical practice.

Improved short-term outcomes for a novel, fluoroscopy-based robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty system compared to manual technique with fluoroscopic assistance.
While robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (RA-THA) has been associated with improved accuracy of component placement, the perioperative and early postoperative outcomes of fluoroscopy-based RA-THA systems have yet to be elucidated. ⋯ Fluoroscopy-based RA-THA demonstrates low rates of postoperative complications, improved postoperative pain profiles, and shortened LOS when compared to manual, fluoroscopy-assisted THA.

Bilateral simultaneous knee arthroplasty shows comparable early outcome and complication rate as staged bilateral knee arthroplasty for patients scored ASA 1-3 if performed by a high-volume surgeon: a retrospective cohort study of 127 cases.
The study compares early outcomes after simultaneous and staged knee arthroplasty in patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA) to evaluate whether simultaneous bilateral TKA shows comparable early outcomes and complication rates to staged bilateral TKA. ⋯ Level IV.
