Lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: is really a good option?
Lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasties (LUKA) account for only < 1% of all knee arthroplasties and for only 5-10% of all unicompartmental knee replacements. This means that there is less published literature on these procedures and that the surgeon's experience with them is smaller than with medial UKA. The aim of this study was to analyze the survival and the clinical-functional outcomes of LUKA according to the type of bearing surface (all-polyethylene versus metal-backed) used. ⋯ LUKA is a valid and definitive option for patients with lateral tibiofemoral osteoarthritis, with a survival rate of > 95% at 5-years follow-up. Clinical-functional outcomes are the same, irrespective of the tibial component used.

Treatment and clinical outcome in patients with femoral head fractures: a long-term follow-up.
A femoral head fracture (Pipkin fracture) is a rare but severe injury. The optimal treatment is controversial, and there is a lack of research focusing on treatment strategies. The study aimed to analyze the treatment strategies in comparison to the outcome in patients after traumatic hip joint dislocation (THD) with concomitant femoral head fractures. ⋯ A femoral head fracture is a severe injury with overall limitations in activities of daily living and a high rate of post-traumatic osteoarthritis and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Fragment fixation had no statistically significant impact on the outcome and PROMs. Treatment strategies should be guided by the fracture type, the patient's condition, and associated injuries. However, concomitant and life-threatening injuries may affect the treatment and limit the outcome.

Patient-reported outcome measures in studies on hallux valgus surgery: what should be assessed.
In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess the outcome following orthopedic surgery. But, we are lacking a standard set of PROMs to assess the outcome of hallux valgus surgery. The aim of this study was to analyze the chosen patient rated outcome scores used in studies reporting on hallux valgus surgery. ⋯ Level I; systematic review of prospective comparative (level II) and randomized controlled trials (level I).

Learning curve comparison between switching approach and switching implant in cementless short stem total hip arthroplasty.
Implementing new approaches or new implants is always related with a certain learning curve in total hip arthroplasty (THA). Currently, many surgeons are switching to minimally invasive approaches combined with short stems for performing THA. Therefore, we aimed to asses and compare the learning curve of switching from an anterolateral Watson Jones approach (ALA) to a direct anterior approach (DAA) with the learning curve of switching from a neck-resecting to a partially neck-sparing short stem in cementless THA. ⋯ A significantly higher overall rate of AE was detected while switching approach compared to switching implant for performing THA. However, according to the results of this study, surgeons should be aware of the learning curve of the adoption to a new implant with different fixation philosophy as well.

ACL reconstruction demonstrates better stability compared to ACL repair for patients with Schenck III and IV knee dislocations.
This study compared mid-term outcomes of two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) restoration techniques within an early total surgical care of acute knee dislocation: repair with additional internal bracing (ACLIB) and reconstruction with autograft (ACLR). Initial results at 12 months demonstrated that ACLR offered superior stability compared to ACLIB. ⋯ Retrospective cohort study, III.
