Case ReportsMaffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma.
We report a rare case of Maffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma in the right shoulder girdle developing from pre-existing enchondroma. In this case, magnetic resonance imaging was useful in diagnosing dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma before surgery. ⋯ Further, the dedifferentiated tumor had three mesenchymal elements: osteosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and fibrosarcoma. This histological heterogenicity may be due to mesodermal dysplasia of Maffucci's syndrome.

Long-term results after implantation of McKee-Farrar total hip prostheses.
From 1973 to 1976, McKee-Farrar total hip arthroplasties were performed in the Orthopaedics Department at the Centre of Pulmology. In the present study, only patients with a complete record of radiological changes at the bone/implant or bone/cement interface were evaluated. ⋯ The design of the metal cup with metal studs at the outer surface has a favourable effect on the stability of the implant/cement combination: loosening at the implant/cement interface did not occur in any of these cases and there were few cement fractures. In spite of the metal-to-metal combination, abrasion is slight and there is no danger of metallosis.

Case ReportsVenous air embolism during knee arthrography. A case report.
A 34-year-old man developed a nonfatal venous air embolism during arthrography of his post-traumatically contractured knee joint. From the arthrographic findings, injected air was assumed to have entered the great saphenous vein via the venous opening in the knee joint. Venous air embolism is an extremely rare complication of knee arthrography, but can occur. As it is potentially fatal, prompt recognition and appropriate positional and supportive therapy are essential.

Ultrasound diagnosis of pathology of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments of the knee joint.
We established a method of diagnosing pathologic conditions of both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) by using ultrasound. Normal ACL and PCL were delineated as hyperechoic images on the screen in sagittal and transverse sections. ⋯ We examined nine ACL and five PCL injuries by our method. This is a safe and an effective method of determining the rupture of ACL and PCL.

Lumbar spine interbody fusion with reinforced hydroxyapatite implants.
Porous coralline and synthetic hydroxyapatite blocks reinforced with either self-reinforced polyactide or polyglycolide were implanted into 15 lumbar intervertebral disc spaces in five minipigs in order to determine whether they could provide an osteoconductive bridge for interbody fusion. Histological examination and radiological analysis with plain films, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were carried out. The osteoconductive properties were promising; creeping bone formation could be observed, although no complete fusion had been achieved at 24 weeks.
