Clinical TrialChange in patellar height in medial and lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: a clinical trial.
Evidence on patellar height changes following unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is lacking. Therefore, this study compared the patella height in patients who underwent medial versus lateral UKA. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was conducted to investigate whether sex, age, and BMI of the patients exert an influence on the postoperative patellar height. ⋯ No difference was found in patella height in patients who have undergone medial compared to lateral UKA. Furthermore, there was no evidence of an association between patient characteristics (sex, age, BMI) and patella height between medial and lateral UKA.

Fully automated assessment of the knee alignment on long leg radiographs following corrective knee osteotomies in patients with valgus or varus deformities.
The assessment of the knee alignment on long leg radiographs (LLR) postoperative to corrective knee osteotomies (CKOs) is highly dependent on the reader's expertise. Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms may help automate and standardise this process. The study aimed to analyse the reliability of an AI-algorithm for the evaluation of LLRs following CKOs. ⋯ Diagnostic Level III.

Drain versus no drain after total ankle arthroplasty: are there any differences in complications rate?
While the efficacy of closed suction drains has been extensively studied in hip, knee, and shoulder surgery, it lacks scientific evidence in the foot and ankle domain, especially after total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). Thus, this study aims to compare the incidence of postoperative complications with and without the application of a closed suction drain following TAA. ⋯ This study showed no effect of applying a closed suction drain after TAA in the incidence of postoperative complications. Since the use of a drain did not negatively affect the outcome, nor did it provide a significant benefit, it can be asserted that there is no evidence to support the routine use of closed suction drains in TAA.

Impact of tourniquet use in total knee arthroplasty on functional recovery and postoperative pain: a prospective study.
Tourniquet use during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of tourniquet use only during cementation compared with its use throughout the entire surgery concerning early outcomes in functional recovery, pain, quadriceps function, and rehabilitation. ⋯ 1; prospective randomized study.

Undersizing of the tibial component in Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) increases the risk of periprosthetic fractures.
Tibial periprosthetic fractures (TPF) after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) are a rare condition that affects about 1% of cases. Known risk factors include age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and bone density, as well as surgical technique and prosthesis design. The purpose of the study was to determine if undersizing of the tibial component in relation to the femoral component increases the risk of tibial periprosthetic fractures. ⋯ Undersizing of implant sizes in UKA increases the risk for TPF especially in patients with small tibial implants. Therefore, mismatched implants should be avoided for UKA particularly when risk factors like obesity, older age, or female gender are present. Tibial periprosthetic fractures were successfully treated by open reduction and internal fixation or conversion to total knee arthroplasty.
