Occupational injuries in orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Austria.
The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type of injuries during the career of orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Austria. The hypothesis was that the percentage of occupational injuries among orthopedic and trauma surgeons aligns with the incidence reported in the United States, thus indicating the need for a workplace prevention program. ⋯ Orthopedic surgeons in Austria show a high incidence of occupational injuries in line with the findings of colleagues from the United States. The impact on the health system consists of absenteeism in the workplace of highly specialized health service providers as well as the incapacity to work of a high quality, highly trained workforce of at least 4%. With more preventive measures and more attention and care in the rehabilitation phase after such injuries, a positive effect could be achieved. We believe that residents should be specifically trained on how to avoid such injuries.

Factors associated with poorer outcomes for posterior lumbar decompression and or/or discectomy: an exploratory analysis of administrative data.
This study aimed to identify factors associated with poorer patient outcomes for lumbar decompression and/or discectomy (PLDD). ⋯ A high-throughput PLDD pathway will not be suitable for all patients. Extra care should be taken for patients aged ≥ 70 years, females, patients undergoing surgery over two spinal levels and those with specific comorbidities or generalised frailty.

Open reduction and internal fixation of crescent fracture-dislocation: anterior or posterior approach?
To date, the approach that prevails in the open reduction and internal fixation of crescent fracture-dislocations (CFD) remains unknown. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of CFD treated via the anterior or posterior approach. ⋯ Open reduction and internal fixation of CFDs obtained satisfactory outcomes through an anterior or posterior approach. The posterior approach achieved a better sacroiliac joint reduction. The optimal indication for the posterior approach was a Day I fracture, followed by a Day II fracture. No correlation was found between the surgical approach and reduction quality in Day III fractures.

Recurrence rates for surgically treated insertional Achilles tendinopathy.
Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is a challenge for every orthopedic surgeon. Although surgical intervention is difficult to avoid after frustrating conservative therapy, little is known about recurrence of this disorder. Therefore the aim of the study was to assess the recurrence rate after primary IAT surgery. ⋯ IV, retrospective cohort study.

Towards a better understanding of knee angular deformities: discrepancies between clinical examination and 2D/3D assessments.
Discrepancy between the clinical examination and the 2D/3D radiographs is a common concern in patients with angular or rotational deformities of the lower limbs, as it may alter clinical judgment and subsequent treatment. The aim was to identify such discrepancies and assess determinants that may contribute to their existence. ⋯ In the presence of positional and/or morphological deformities, physical examination and 2D assessment of knee alignment could be biased due to axes projection errors. A better understanding of 3D alignment of the knee as part of the entire lower limb from pelvis to toes, may lead to a better diagnosis and subsequently a better treatment of knee angular deformities.
