Learning curve of the Krackow suture technique for the repair of Achilles tendon rupture.
Knowledge on the learning curve for the repair of Achilles tendon rupture is limited. The aim of this study was to quantify the learning curve for the Krackow suture technique for the repair of Achilles tendon rupture and to identify the correlation between the cumulative volume of cases and clinical outcome measures. ⋯ The learning rate for the Krackow suture technique for the repair of Achilles tendon rupture was approximately 89%, indicating that the required operative time can decrease by up to 11% when the cumulative volume of cases doubles. Therefore, it is important to rapidly accumulate surgical experience during the early phase of training.

Surgical timing for torsional ankle fractures is not associated with post-operative complications in patients with type II diabetes mellitus.
Surgical stabilization of ankle fractures is one of the most commonly performed procedures in orthopedics, but these injuries can prove difficult to manage in patients with type II diabetes mellitus (DMII). The goal of this study is to determine if a correlation exists between surgical timing and complication rates among diabetic patients with ankle fractures. ⋯ Among patients with DMII, we failed to show a correlation between surgical timing and post-operative complication.

Hip resurfacing and posterior approach total hip arthroplasty have equivalent blood loss when tranexamic acid is used: a propensity score matched cohort analysis.
Hip resurfacing (HR) requires a larger approach and soft tissue dissection and might therefore be associated with increased blood loss compared to total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the effect of the adoption of tranexamic acid (TXA) in this setting is unknown. Therefore, the current study compares the blood loss and transfusion requirements between HR and posterior THA in patients receiving TXA. ⋯ HR using a standard TXA regimen is not associated with greater perioperative blood loss than posterior THA and does not result in increased transfusion requirements. Both surgical procedures can be considered equally safe in terms of perioperative blood management when TXA is used.

ReviewPost-operative peri-prosthetic fracture rates following the use of cemented polished taper-slip stems for primary total hip arthroplasty: a systematic review.
Peri-prosthetic fractures (PPFs) are a serious complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA) associated with significant morbidity, mortality and re-operation similar to the rates seen following femoral neck fractures. When exploring the PPF rates around cemented stems, many studies combine the results of composite beam and taper-slip stems despite their different philosophies. This review looks specifically at PPFs with the use of cemented stems of the taper-slip philosophy to evaluate the demographics, PPF rate and fracture patterns in this patient cohort. ⋯ This review suggests an association with being older and female, and a greater risk of PPFs secondary to low energy falls in cemented polished taper-slip stems.
