Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of extension block pinning technique versus pin orthosis-extension block pinning technique for acute mallet fractures: a prospective randomized clinical trial.
The extension block pinning technique (EBPT) is a popular surgical treatment for mallet fractures; however, it has several drawbacks. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to compare EBPT to the pin orthosis-extension block pinning method (PO-EBPT) in the treatment of mallet fractures involving more than one-third of the joint surface but without primary joint dislocation. ⋯ In comparison to the EBPT technique, the group of patients operated with PO-EBPT had superior clinical outcomes and less loss of extension at the DIP joint according to the Crawford's criteria.

ReviewHistory of diagnostics and treatment of scapular fractures in children and adolescents and its clinical importance.
Almost 70 scapular fractures in children and adolescents, up to the age of 17 years, have been described in detail in the literature since 1839. The diagnosis of these injuries was based on autopsy, radiographs, CT and MRI examinations. The most frequent findings were fractures/epiphyseolyses of the coracoid, followed by fractures of the infraspinous part of the body and avulsion of the inferior angle of the scapular body. ⋯ Scapulothoracic dissociation was also recorded in several cases. The majority of fractures were treated non-operatively; operative treatment was used in glenoid fractures, certain fractures of the coracoid and fractures of the scapular body with intrathoracic penetration. Except for scapulothoracic dissociation, outcomes of treatment of these injuries were very good.

A biomechanical comparison of steel screws versus PLLA and magnesium screws for the Latarjet procedure.
The fixation of the coracoid process onto the glenoid is an important step of the Latarjet procedure, and implant-associated complications are a relevant and severe problem. This study compares the fixation strength and failure mode of two biodegradable materials with stainless-steel screws. ⋯ Controlled laboratory study.

The epicondylar ratio can be reliably determined in both computed tomography and X-ray.
One of the key factors to the successful revision of total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) is the reconstruction of the joint line, which can be determined using the epicondylar ratio (ER). The measurement is established in X-ray and MRI. However, it is not known whether computed tomography (CT) allows a more reliable determination. The objective was to assess the reliability of the ER in CT and to determine the correlation between the ER in CT and a.p. X-ray of the knee. ⋯ The ER can be reliably determined in X-ray and CT. Measurements of the two image modalities correlate. Prior to rTKA, the sole use of the X-ray is possible.

Shoulder assessment by smartphone: a valid alternative for times of social distancing.
The delivery of orthopaedic care via telemedicine services has the potential to promote accessibility and decrease medical care expenses, while facilitating the control of infectious disease spreading. The purpose of this study was to assess agreement regarding diagnosis, recommended course of management and the perceived need for additional diagnostic testing between a video examination (VE) and a face to face (FTF) assessment of patients with shoulder disorders. ⋯ Video examination of patients with shoulder disorders may present a valid alternative to FTF examination. Nevertheless, the content of the video-based physical examination may need to be modified to facilitate a clearer detection of indications for specific interventions or diagnostic tests.
