ReviewEffectiveness and safety of percutaneous kyphoplasty combined with zoledronic acid in treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a meta-analysis.
To investigate the clinical effectiveness of combination treatment of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) and zoledronic acid (ZOL) in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). ⋯ In patients with OVCF, combination treatment of PKP and ZOL showed more effective than PKP alone in improving BMD and bone marker levels, relieving pain, as well as reducing the risk of new fractures. More large-scale RCTs are needed to verify our findings.

Patient compliance with hip precautions 12 weeks following primary elective total hip arthroplasty.
Patients are routinely advised to follow hip precautions following their total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery. There is lack of evidence regarding compliance with these precautions and when patients return to activities of daily living following their surgery. ⋯ We found that the majority of patients do not adhere to hip precautions advice. They return to their activities of daily living prior to the end of prescription period based on their pain and activity level. Lack of adherence to hip precautions do not predispose to hip dislocation in the immediate post-operative period.

Comparison of tibial plateau fracture surgical outcomes between young and elderly patients: are outcomes really poorer in the elderly?
Several studies have reported that total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a suitable solution to treat elderly patients with complex tibial plateau fractures. The purpose of the present study was to compare surgical treatment outcomes after open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) between elderly and younger patients. ⋯ Age ≥ 60 years is not an independent risk factor of poor radiographic outcome and high complication rate in tibial plateau fractures. This indicates that ORIF is still a good solution to treat elderly patients, similar to their younger counterparts.

Anterior hip replacement: lower dislocation rates despite less restrictions?
Dislocation in Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common postoperative complication and reason for revision surgery. The direct anterior approach has become more popular over the last decade. The purpose of this study was to compare postoperative dislocation rates of the direct anterior and the posterior approach at a one-year follow-up. ⋯ Even in a higher-risk patient population, the direct anterior approach showed a lower dislocation rate compared to the posterior approach in the first year after surgery.

The influence of K-wire transfixation on proximalization of the first metacarpal after resection suspension interposition arthroplasty.
Osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint is a common degenerative disease and surgical treatment includes resection suspension interposition arthroplasty (RSIA) with or without temporary transfixation of the first metacarpal. One major drawback includes proximalization of the first metacarpal during the postoperative course. Specific data comparing different transfixation techniques in this context is sparse. ⋯ The results of our study suggest that transfixation with two K-wires should be preferred to transfixation with one K-wire after RSIA. Specifically, transfixation from first to second metacarpal and from first metacarpal to carpus resulted in least proximalization of the first metacarpal postoperatively.
