Comparative StudyComparison of the outcome between unilateral and bilateral open wedge high tibial osteotomy in the bilateral varus knees.
Bilateral open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) can be performed in a staged manner to enable the healing and rehabilitation of each limb separately after surgery. However, the effects of staged bilateral OWHTO on the pattern of recovery and changes over time for each limb have not been established. Additionally, there is a lack of information regarding the optimal timing for staged surgery. ⋯ The smaller loss of correction in the unilateral OWHTO group occurred compared to the bilateral OWHTO group. Additionally, surgeons should keep in mind that the amount of correction loss may be greater if staged bilateral OWHTO is performed at intervals of 3 months or less.

New angle measurement device to control the posterior tibial slope angle in medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy.
Medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy has been associated with an unintentional increase in the posterior tibial slope angle. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel bone spreader angle rod to maintain the native posterior tibial slope angle in medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy. ⋯ IV.

Cementless total hip arthroplasty for severely dislocated hips previously treated with Schanz osteotomy of the proximal femur.
We report the short-term outcomes of total hip arthroplasty(THA) in patients previously treated with Schanz osteotomy (SO). ⋯ THA for hips previously treated with SO is technically demanding. If careful preoperative planning is performed, successful treatment can be achieved.

Observational StudyIs treatment of geriatric hip fracture patients cost-covering? Results of a prospective study conducted at a German University Hospital.
Hip fractures have increased medical and socio-economic importance due to demographic transition. Information concerning direct treatment costs and their reimbursement in Germany is lacking. ⋯ Treatment of geriatric hip fracture patients in a university hospital in Germany does not seem to be cost-covering. Adjustment of the reimbursement for treatment of complex hip fracture patients should be considered.

Functional outcomes after removal of hardware in patellar fracture: are we helping our patients?
Functional outcomes after Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) of the patella are variable. Common complications of patella ORIF include persistent anterior knee pain, limited range of motion and symptomatic hardware. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if removal of hardware is beneficial to symptomatic patients after patellar fracture fixation. ⋯ Hardware removal after patella ORIF significantly improves patient reported pain and quality of life outcomes but not functional outcomes. Patients should be counseled regarding the expected outcome of hardware removal following patella ORIF and diabetic patients should be given special consideration before undergoing this procedure.
