Effective prevention of recurrent dislocation following primary cemented Endo-MarkIII/SP2 total hip arthroplasty using a posterior lip augmentation device.
This retrospective study was performed to determine the effectiveness of preventing recurrent dislocation following primary cemented Endo-MarkIII/SP2 total hip replacement using a posterior lip augmentation device (PLAD). ⋯ Surgical treatment of recurrent dislocation following primary cemented Endo-MarkIII/SP2 total hip replacement using a posterior lip augmentation device is a safe and effective procedure which can lead to a secondary stabilization of the total hip arthroplasty in about 90 % of the patients.

Patient characteristics and outcomes of a hip fracture and concomitant fracture compared with hip fracture alone: results from a United Kingdom teaching hospital.
A proportion of patients sustaining hip fractures present with a concomitant fracture. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between patient characteristics and clinical outcomes, in those with a hip and concomitant fracture compared with those sustaining a hip fracture alone from a clinical service registry. ⋯ Patients with concomitant fractures have similar patient characteristics, except gender, polypharmacy and long term steroid use; and outcomes to those presenting with hip fracture alone, except a longer average inpatient stay.

ReviewThe influence of the operation technique and implant used in the treatment of periprosthetic hip and interprosthetic femur fractures: a systematic literature review of 1571 cases.
A systematic literature review on periprosthetic/interprosthetic fracture fixation after hip arthroplasties was performed to summarize available clinical data. Operation techniques and implants used were evaluated as possible risk factors for outcomes. ⋯ The clinical evidence of published studies dealing with periprosthetic/interprosthetic fractures after hip arthroplasty is generally low. This literature search suggested higher rates of nonunion and refracture after an open approach and a higher risk of nonunion for non-locking plates compared to locking plates. Based on the available clinical evidence, no treatment recommendations can be given.

Comparative StudyFour-corner fusion: comparison of patient satisfaction and functional outcome of conventional K-wire technique vs. a new locking plate.
Four-corner fusion is a standard procedure for advanced carpal collapse. Several operative techniques and numerous implants for osseous fixation have been described. Recently, a specially designed locking plate (Aptus©, Medartis, Basel, Switzerland) was introduced. The purpose of this study was to compare functional results after osseous fixation using K-wires (standard of care, SOC) with four-corner fusion and locking plate fixation. ⋯ Both techniques for four-corner fusion have similar healing rates. Using the more expensive locking implant avoids a second operation for K-wire removal, but no statistical differences were detected in functional outcome as well as in patient satisfaction when compared to SOC.
