Comparative StudySimple and comminuted displaced olecranon fractures: a clinical comparison between tension band wiring and plate fixation techniques.
The purpose of this retrospective study is to compare the clinical, functional outcome and complications occurrence between tension band wiring (TBW) and plate fixation both for simple and comminuted displaced olecranon fractures. ⋯ The findings of this study indicate that both with the use of TBW and plate fixation excellent/good clinical outcomes with minimal loss of physical capacity, little pain and disability can be obtained in the majority of patients with simple and comminuted displaced olecranon fractures. Hardware removal was most frequently observed after TBW.

Earlier studies have found varying contamination rates using separate skin and deep knives in total hip (THA) and total knee (TKA) arthroplasty surgery. Previous studies were primarily conducted in the setting of concomitant use of laminar airflow and/or plastic adhesive draping. This has lead to conflicting conclusions regarding discarding the skin knife or not. ⋯ Contamination of the skin knife was found in eight patients (2.8 %), contamination of the "deep" knife in five patients (1.8 %) and contamination of the control knife in five patients (1.8 %). No patient developed an infection with 1-year follow-up. Our findings suggest a very low rate of contamination of the skin knife using modern antiseptic technique without laminar airflow and/or plastic adhesive draping and do not support the use of a separate skin knife in arthroplasty surgery.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA comparative study between local bone graft with a cage and with no cage in single posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF): a multicenter study.
A retrospective study was performed to compare the clinical and radiological results between local bone graft with a cage and without using a cage in patients treated with posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery. ⋯ Local bone graft without a cage is as beneficial as that with a cage for PLIF. Comparing with local bone graft using a single cage, we believe that the purely local bone graft is a more ideal way in single PLIF.

Anatomical conditions of the posterior pelvic ring regarding bisegmental transverse sacroiliac screw fixation: a 3D morphometric study of 125 pelvic CT datasets.
Sacroiliac (SI) screws are used for osteosynthesis in unstable posterior pelvic ring injuries. In the cases of "sacral dysplasia", in which the elevated upper sacrum does not allow a secure SI screw insertion into the S1 level, the S2 segment must be used to achieve stable fixation. The bone quality of the S2 segment is thinner compared to that of the S1 vertebra and may cause biomechanical weakness. An additional SI screw insertion into the S3 level may improve stability. With respect to the anatomical conditions of the posterior pelvic ring, there have been no anatomical investigations to date regarding SI screw placement into the third sacral segment. ⋯ SI screw insertion into the third sacral level deserves discussion in the cases of sacral dysplasia. Biomechanical and practical utility must be verified.
