Preoperative factors associated with red blood cell transfusion in hip fracture patients.
Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is a frequently used treatment in patients admitted with a fractured hip, but the use remains an area of much debate. The aim of this study was to determine preoperative factors associated with the risk of receiving a red blood cell transfusion in hip fracture patients. ⋯ Several readily available preoperative factors in the form of age, residence, ASA, admission haemoglobin, medication and type of fracture were independently associated with the likelihood of receiving a red blood cell transfusion in patients admitted with a fractured hip.

Morphologic characteristics of the posterior malleolus fragment: a 3-D computer tomography based study.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of the posterior malleolus fragment (PMF) based on 3-D computed tomography scans, and evaluated the variability in different types of injuries (ankle fracture, spiral tibial shaft fracture and pilon fracture). ⋯ Although the PMFs appear to be highly variable, most of the PMFs were located on the posterolateral of the distal tibia, and showed features with vertical nature. The information obtained from this study will be helpful for fracture models in a future biomechanical study and for determining appropriate surgical approaches.

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty after failed deltoid flap reconstruction.
Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) yields unsatisfactory results after deltoid flap reconstruction due to defect of the deltoid muscle. ⋯ Despite of a localized defect of the deltoid muscle after deltoid flap repair, RSA can reliably be associated with a satisfactory outcome.

Comparative StudyPlatelet-rich plasma for enhancing surgical rotator cuff repair: evaluation and comparison of two application methods in a rat model.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a natural concentrate of autologous growth factors now being widely tested in different fields of medicine for its potential in enhancing the regeneration of tissue with low healing potential. However, studies of PRP in enhancing rotator cuff repair have been contradictory, perhaps because of how PRP is administered. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of PRP and compare two different application methods of PRP on rotator cuff healing. ⋯ The application of PRP, independent of the application method, significantly improved biomechanical properties at the rotator cuff tendon-bone interface. The type of application, injection or absorption from a sponge did not influence the effect of PRP on rotator cuff healing.

Co-morbidities in elderly patients with hip fracture: recommendations of the ISFR-IOF hip fracture outcomes working group.
Hip fractures are the second leading cause of hospitalization in the aged and by 2041, epidemiologists forecast an increase in economic cost to $2.4 billion. The hip patient population often presents with comorbidities causing these patients to receive less aggressive medical treatment and have a low quality of life. We believe that physical function is a patient-important outcome for many medical and surgical interventions. The functional co-morbidity index (FCI), unlike prior co-morbidity indices, was developed with physical function as an outcome instead of being designed for administrative purposes or to predict mortality. Our objective was to evaluate the perceptions of practitioners in hip fracture care about the impact of comorbidities on physical function as primary outcome. ⋯ The FCI may provide a useful instrument to predict functional outcome after hip fracture; however, the index may need to be modified for this specific population.
