A novel imageless accelerometer-based navigation system improves acetabular cup placement accuracy during total hip arthroplasty in the lateral decubitus position.
The accuracy of acetabular cup placement using conventional portable imageless navigation systems in total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the lateral decubitus position remains challenging. Several novel portable imageless navigation systems have been developed recently to improve cup placement accuracy in THA. This study compared the accuracy of acetabular cup placement using a conventional accelerometer-based portable navigation (c-APN) system and a novel accelerometer-based portable navigation (n-APN) system during THA in the lateral decubitus position. ⋯ The n-APN system improved the accuracy of the cup placement compared to the c-APN system for THA in the lateral decubitus position.

Ipsilateral pubic ramus fracture during total hip arthroplasty is not rare: does it matter?
Periprosthetic fractures in total hip arthroplasty (THA) have been well described and studied. However, there is a lack of reports on ipsilateral pubic ramus fractures during THA due to the rare occurrence of such fractures and ambiguity of symptoms. With the use of postoperative computed tomography (CT) examinations, we have identified that asymptomatic ipsilateral pubic ramus fractures occur frequently during THA. This study aims to evaluate the incidence, location, clinical outcomes, and risk factors of ipsilateral pubic ramus fractures during THA. ⋯ Although the incidence of ipsilateral pubic ramus fractures during THA is high, treatment is not required as they do not cause any significant clinical symptoms or affect the prognosis of THA. However, the possibility of occurrence of these fractures must be explained to the patients before surgery.

What are the predisposing factors for periprosthetic fractures following total hip arthroplasty? - a National Inpatient Sample-based study.
With a progressive rise in the number of total hip arthroplasties (THA) over the past decades, the proportion of patients sustaining peri-prosthetic fractures (PPF) has been substantially increasing. In this context, the need for clearly understanding the factors predisposing patients to PPF following THA and the impact of these adverse complications on the overall healthcare burden cannot be understated. ⋯ Patients with PPF require higher rates of emergent admission, longer hospital stay and greater admission-related expenditure. Female sex, advanced age, morbid or super obesity, and presence of medical comorbidities (such as Down's syndrome, cirrhosis, Parkinson's disease, previous colostomy, and previous CABG) significantly enhance the risk of PPF after THA. These medical conditions must be kept in clinicians' minds and close follow-up needs to be implemented in such situations so as to mitigate these complications.

Postoperative recreational sports and subjective shoulder function: a comprehensive analysis following intramedullary stabilization of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures.
Introduction Sports-related outcomes and the role of recreational sports activities for shoulder function after intramedullary stabilization (IMS) of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures (DMCFs) in the general population are not well known. In this study, we aimed to determine the sport-related outcomes (return-to-sports [RTS] rate, type of sports, time until RTS, and intensity) and to explore the role of sports after IMS of DMCFs. Materials and Methods This single-center, retrospective, cohort study included patients who underwent IMS of DMCFs between 2009 and 2022 at a Level II trauma center in Germany, experienced no major complications, and had completed at least 1 year of follow-up. ⋯ Conclusions The sport-related outcomes after IMS of DMCFs in our cohort were comparable to those achieved after plate osteosynthesis, and IMS reported in the literature. Recreational sports activities benefitted subjective shoulder function, thereby encouraging further research and potentially influencing management policies. Level of evidence Grade IV - a retrospective observational cohort study.

Is there an impact of a video-based patient informed consent in elective hand surgery?
Patient informed consent is a crucial subject in preoperative care of patients before elective hand surgery, ensuring that patients have the necessary information and a comprehensive understanding to make autonomous decisions. The use of video-based informed consent systems is an innovative concept to enhance the consent process with multimedia tools. In addition to the conventional process, mostly relying on verbal communication and written documents, the video-based approach aims to present information in a standardized and visually appealing format. ⋯ The use of a video-based patient information system in elective hand surgery had a positive impact on patient education and satisfaction with the informed consent process. Therefore, it is a powerful tool in preoperative management to guarantee a standardized and educative informed consent.
