Comparative StudyCarotid artery stenting versus endarterectomy in relation to perioperative myocardial ischemia, troponin T release and major cardiac events.
Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is less invasive than endarterectomy. This study examined differences in perioperative myocardial ischemia, troponin T release and clinical cardiac events in patients undergoing CAS compared with endarterectomy. ⋯ CAS is associated with a lower incidence of perioperative myocardial ischemia and troponin T release, compared with endarterectomy.

Q-wave prediction of myocardial infarct location, size and transmural extent at magnetic resonance imaging.
We investigated how pathologic Q waves or equivalents predict location, size and transmural extent of myocardial infarction (MI). ⋯ Q waves reliably predict MI location, size and transmural extent only in patients with anterior infarction. A tall and broad R wave in V1-V2 reflects a lateral MI.

Predictors of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery.
Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias associated with not only increased morbidity after coronary artery bypass grafting but also increased healthcare costs. Many factors are associated with atrial fibrillation onset after coronary artery bypass grafting. We prospectively examined which factors could predict atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting. ⋯ Age, poor left ventricular functions, P(max) and P-wave dispersion are found to be independent predictors of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting.

Brain natriuretic peptide concentration in pericardial fluid is independently associated with atrial fibrillation after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
Postoperative atrial fibrillation is associated with the increased incidence of morbidities and mortality. Predisposing determinants of atrial fibrillation development after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting remain unclear. We hypothesized that pericardial fluid natriuretic peptide concentrations have a predictive value for developing postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients who have undergone off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. ⋯ Our results suggested that pericardial fluid brain natriuretic peptide concentration is independently associated with the development of atrial fibrillation after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.

Reproducibility of transthoracic echocardiography in small animals using clinical equipment.
Transthoracic echocardiography has been employed to assess left ventricular dimensions and function in small animals. The aim of this study was to identify the limits of transthoracic echocardiography in a commonly used Wistar rat model by assessing intraobserver variability, interobserver variability, and day-to-day variability of examinations implying registrations and measurements. ⋯ M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography in large rats by clinically common high-end ultrasound systems can be assessed reliably. Parameters of global left ventricular performance like stroke volume and cardiac output could not be assessed with similar reliability.
