Racial discrimination, response to unfair treatment, and depressive symptoms among pregnant black and African American women in the United States.
To assess the association between self-reported racial discrimination and prenatal depressive symptoms among black women. ⋯ Our findings suggest that higher levels of perceived racial discrimination may increase depressive symptoms during pregnancy among U.S. black women. Interventions involving talking to others may aid in reducing the risk of depressive symptoms among black women experiencing higher levels of racial discrimination.

Measuring health disparities: trends in racial-ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in obesity among 2- to 18-year old youth in the United States, 2001-2010.
Although eliminating health disparities by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) is a top public health priority internationally and in the United States, weight-related racial/ethnic and SES disparities persist among adults and children in the United States. Few studies have examined how these disparities have changed over time; these studies are limited by the reliance on rate differences or ratios to measure disparities. We sought to advance existing research by using a set of disparity metrics on both the absolute and relative scales to examine trends in childhood obesity disparities over time. ⋯ Disparities in obesity have not improved during the past decade. The use of different disparity metrics may lead to different conclusions with respect to how disparities have changed over time, highlighting the need to evaluate disparities using a variety of metrics.

Health impacts of air pollution: a life course approach for examining predictors of respiratory health in adulthood.
This research applies a life course health development framework to examine the impacts of childhood exposure to air pollution on respiratory health in adulthood. ⋯ Findings suggest that long-term childhood exposure to air pollution does not predict respiratory conditions and symptoms in adulthood. However, respiratory health in childhood predicts adulthood respiratory health, thus suggesting that the health impacts of any exposures that impact respiratory health during critical or sensitive times in childhood are long term.

Workplace homicides among U.S. women: the role of intimate partner violence.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important public health issue with serious consequences for the workplace. Workplace homicides occurring to U.S. women over a 6-year period, including those perpetrated by an intimate partner, are described. ⋯ A large percentage of homicides occurring to women at work are perpetrated by intimate partners. WPV prevention programs should incorporate strategies to prevent and respond to IPV.

Prescription medication use among normal weight, overweight, and obese adults, United States, 2005-2008.
We sought to describe differences between normal weight, overweight, and obese adults in use of specific prescription medication classes. ⋯ Obese adults in the United States use several prescription medication classes more frequently, than normal weight adults, including hypertension, lipid-lowering, and diabetes medications.
