ReviewSleep apnea and hormone replacement therapy: a pilot study and a literature review.
Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a common condition and a risk factor of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of a gestagen (trimegeston) and estradiol hormone combination on perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with SAS. ⋯ HRT might be an alternative in the treatment of SAS.

Maternity wards or emergency obstetric rooms? Incidence of near-miss events in African hospitals.
This study examines near-miss obstetric events in African hospitals as to the frequency, nature, and ratio of near miss to death and considers whether these could become useful indicators for monitoring the performance of obstetric services in Africa. ⋯ Near-miss events are extremely common in some African hospitals, with a high proportion arriving in critical conditions. Near-miss events must be estimated separately for those already in a critical condition on arrival and those developing after admission; the first as a good indicator of the effectiveness of emergency referrals and the second as a potential tool for monitoring the performance of obstetric services.

Association between maternal age and the likelihood of a cesarean section: a population-based multivariate logistic regression analysis.
A majority of studies examining the relationship between advancing maternal age and the likelihood of cesarean section (CS) use data from regional samples or from a limited number of medical institutions. This study uses population-based data from Taiwan to explore the relationship between maternal age and the likelihood of a CS. ⋯ This study found that, after adjusting for maternal indications, and healthcare institution and physician characteristics, there was a significant relationship between advancing maternal age and an increased likelihood of a CS. This finding, together with the high CS rate of 32.1% in Taiwan, one of the highest reported in the world today, highlights an imperative need to devise interventions to reduce the frequency of CSs.

Neonatal outcome in a Danish national cohort of 8602 children born after in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection: the role of twin pregnancy.
In Denmark, 4% of all infants are born after in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and 40% of these children are twins. ⋯ This study indicates that neonatal outcome in IVF/ICSI twins is considerably poorer than in singletons. Thus, the impact is to draw the attention of clinicians to the benefit of elective single embryo transfer (eSET).

The relationship between clinical parameters and health-related quality of life as measured by the 15D in incontinent women before and after treatment.
The purpose of this study was to correlate the clinical parameters with a health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure and to describe the change of HRQoL caused by treatment and its modifying factors among urinary incontinent women. ⋯ There was a modest correlation of incontinence severity measures with quality of life impairment. The challenge for the future will be to improve the success of treatment for women with urge UI. The generic 15D appears to be sensitive to detect change in HRQoL due to treatment of UI women.
