Do very sick neonates born at term have antenatal risks? 2. Infants ventilated primarily for lung disease.
1. Ascertain antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for term neonates ventilated primarily for respiratory problems. 2. Describe the neonatal morbidity and mortality. ⋯ The pathways to neonatal respiratory morbidity in term infants are multifactorial. Several areas which warrant more in-depth study are: elective cesarean section at 37-38 weeks gestation, fetal growth restriction, macrosomia and the pattern of in-utero growth, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, gestational diabetes, pyrexia in labor and the role of chorioamnionitis.

The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous condition with genetic predisposition. It is characterized by a myriad of symptoms including oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, anovulation or infertility, hirsutism or acne. Insulin resistance appears to be an important factor in PCOS though the lack of an etiology has led to symptom oriented therapy which includes lifestyle modification, the use of cyclical progestagens and antiandrogens. ⋯ Therapeutic approaches to PCOS remain an ongoing source of debate. Insulin sensitizing agents may bring new hope in therapy. Future research is aimed at shedding light on the pathophysiology so as to optimize treatment of women with PCOS.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialCan the endometrial thickness as measured by trans-vaginal sonography be used to exclude polyps or hyperplasia in pre-menopausal patients with abnormal uterine bleeding?
To combine findings of normal mid-line echoes from TVS (trans-vaginal sonography) with cut-off levels for endometrial thickness, in order to examine the associated risk of abnormalities in the uterine cavity. ⋯ Using TVS, low levels of endometrial thickness reduced the possibility of abnormalities such as polyps and hyperplasia, but did not exclude them. Low cut-off levels for endometrial thickness did not increase the diagnostic performance in cases with normal sonograms.

Levels of dimethylarginines and cytokines in mild and severe preeclampsia.
The objectives were 1. to evaluate if the endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine was altered in mild and severe forms of preeclampsia, and 2. to assess the relationship between dimethylarginines and the cytokine response in preeclampsia. ⋯ Plasma concentrations of both asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine were significantly elevated both in mild and severe preeclampsia. Symmetric, but not asymmetric, dimethylarginine correlated to the severity of the condition. Plasma levels of interleukin-6 and -8 were also elevated in severe preeclampsia but no direct correlations were found between these cytokines and dimethylarginines.
