Appendicitis in pregnancy: diagnosis, management and complications.
Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical presentation, management and outcome in patients who underwent appendectomy during pregnancy. ⋯ Appendicitis in pregnancy should be suspected when a pregnant woman complains of new abdominal pain. No laboratory finding was found to be diagnostic for acute appendicitis during pregnancy. Considerable fetal loss was found after appendectomy during pregnancy in the first and second trimester. No increase in pregnancy complications in cases with perforated appendicitis was observed. The combination of symptoms and clinical judgement is still vital in deciding which patient needs surgical treatment. Based on the results in the present study we recommend prophylactic antibiotic treatment in all laparotomies during pregnancy when appendicitis is suspected.

Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain and changes in bone density.
To elucidate whether there is an association between pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain and changes in bone density. ⋯ The results indicate that bone density decreases during pregnancy and lactation. The decrease in bone density was not associated with back or pelvic pain during pregnancy. It remains unclear whether bone loss is associated with back and pelvic pain during lactation.

Selective arterial embolization of the uterine arteries in the management of intractable post-partum hemorrhage.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of selective arterial embolization in the management of intractable post-partum hemorrhage. ⋯ Selective emergency arterial embolization is an effective means of controlling severe post-partum hemorrhage. This procedure avoids high risk surgery and maintains reproductive ability.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialEffectiveness of primary level antenatal care in decreasing anemia at term in Tanzania.
In Tanzania the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy is high inspite of a high antenatal attendance and an established national policy of routine hematinic supplementation and malaria chemosuppression to all pregnant women, free of cost in all antenatal clinics. ⋯ Ensuring an adequate supply of drugs seems to be the most important activity to achieve safe hemoglobin levels in pregnant women, but even an active antenatal program has a limited effect when anemia is highly prevalent and booking is late.

Clinical TrialLabor induction by vaginal misoprostol in grand multiparous women.
Grand multiparous women in poor and under-privileged settings run a high risk of uterine rupture at labor induction. The purpose was to elucidate whether vaginal misoprostol medication is a safe and cost-effective alternative induction method in grand multiparous women, in whom, under prevailing circumstances, induction by oxytocin is associated with high risk of adverse maternal outcome of pregnancy. ⋯ Induction of under-privileged grand multiparous women with live fetus or with fetal death can be performed safely and cost-effectively by vaginal misoprostol.
