Leptin induces IL-6 and IL-8 expression through leptin receptor Ob-Rb in human dental pulp fibroblasts.
Leptin, through binding to its special receptor (Ob-Rb), has potent effects on immunity and inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the expression of leptin receptor Ob-Rb in human dental pulp fibroblasts (HDPFs) and the effects of leptin on the production of proinflammatory cytokines of IL-6 and IL-8 by HDPFs. ⋯ Leptin may up-regulate IL-6 and IL-8 production through binding with Ob-Rb in HDPFs via the activation of different intracellular signalling pathways.

Comparative StudyQuantitative sensory testing (QST) in the orofacial region of healthy Chinese: influence of site, gender and age.
To establish a preliminary thermal and mechanical somatosensory profile using a standardized quantitative sensory testing (QST) to investigate site, gender and age differences in healthy Chinese. ⋯ Application of standardized QST can provide valuable information of orofacial somatosensory phenotypes in a Chinese population. Age, gender and site are mandatory to control for.

ReviewQuantitative sensory testing for assessment of somatosensory function in human oral mucosa: a review.
This narrative review provides an overview of the quantitative sensory testing (QST) to assess somatosensory function in human oral mucosa. ⋯ QST has been proved to be sufficiently stable and reliable, and valuable information has been obtained regarding somatosensory function in healthy volunteers, special populations and orofacial pain patients. However, as most of the studies were highly heterogeneous, the results are difficult to compare quantitatively. A standardized intraoral QST protocol is recommended and expected to help advance a mechanism-based assessment of neuropathies and other intraoral pain conditions.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAnalgesic effect of topical oral capsaicin gel in burning mouth syndrome.
To investigate the effectiveness of repeated topical application of oral capsaicin gel in two different concentrations for relief of burning/stinging sensations in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). ⋯ Topical capsaicin might be an alternative for the short-term treatment of BMS. However, further studies are needed to investigate especially the gastro-intestinal side-effects which may limit its long-term use.

Influences of parents, close friends and classmates on four co-existing oral health practices in Saudi male teenagers.
The objective of this study is to investigate the association between oral health practices and similar practices adopted by parents, close friends and classmates in a group of Saudi male teenagers. ⋯ In early adolescence, four oral health practices of Saudi males were associated with those perceived to be adopted by their close friends. Fathers' use of sugary drinks was also significantly associated with that of teenagers.
