Response of human oral mucosa and skin to histamine provocation: laser Doppler perfusion imaging discloses differences in the nociceptive nervous system.
To investigate the existence of histamine-excitable nerve fibers in the oral mucosa and to compare the response to histamine provocation in healthy volunteers with that in a small group of patients with chronic oral pain. ⋯ Intra-oral flare could be induced by activating histamine-excitable nerve fibers. Both duration and intensity of the flare were considerably less pronounced than in the control skin site. Histamine application was not clearly associated with itch.

Comparative StudyEffect of heterotopic noxious conditioning stimulation on electrical and pressure pain thresholds in two different anatomical regions.
The aims of the study were to investigate the influence of heterotopic noxious conditioning stimulation (HNCS) on pain thresholds in the orofacial and spinal regions and to find out whether there are gender differences in this respect. ⋯ We conclude that, in general, HNCS induced by cold pressor stimulation increases pain thresholds, but the magnitude of the effect differs between the orofacial region and the finger and is influenced by the tissue and type of test stimuli.

A two-year follow-up study of temporomandibular disorders in a female Sami population: validation of cases and controls as predicted by questionnaire.
The first aim of this study was to validate persistent, severe symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among Sami females, as predicted by questionnaire. The second aim was to establish diagnoses according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) Axis 1 among predicted cases and controls. The third aim was to compare subjects with severe TMD to controls in regard to dental occlusion, general health, and parafunctions. ⋯ Long-standing, intense, and frequent TMD symptoms remained essentially unchanged over the 2-year follow-up of females in a Sami population. Presence of severe TMD was related to impaired general health and awareness of oral parafunctions.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of therapeutic jaw exercise on temporomandibular disorders in individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a specific therapeutic jaw exercise on the temporomandibular disorders of patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders. ⋯ In conclusion, the therapeutic jaw exercises, in addition to the regular whiplash rehabilitation program, did not reduce symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders.

Effects of isometric contraction on intramuscular level of neuropeptide Y and local pain perception.
The release of neuropeptide Y (NPY) is reported to increase in ischemic conditions and may thus be involved in chronic myalgia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of isometric contraction on intramuscular levels of NPY in relation to local pain development. ⋯ Pain is developed in the trapezius and masseter muscles during repeated isometric contraction. The NPY level is increased in the trapezius muscle but is not associated with the pain development.
