Effects of repeated intraperitoneal injections of polyinosine-polycytidylic acid on spinal cord cells were analysed. After each injection, the number of ED-1 microglia significantly increased in rat spinal cords. Expression of endothelial monocyte-activating polypeptide II, however, was not observed. ⋯ Astrocyte activation was observed after the first injection using glial fibrillary acidic protein staining. Simultaneously with glia activation, hyperalgesia was observed, but the expression of P2X4 receptor, which is considered to be closely associated with hyperalgesia, on microglia was not detected. In sum, our data suggest that repeated peripheral injections of polyinosine-polycytidylic acid might alert the central nervous system through limited activation of microglia and astrocytes.

Topiramate inhibits cortical spreading depression in rat and cat: impact in migraine aura.
Cortical spreading depression is thought to be the pathophysiological correlate of the neurological symptoms in migraine with aura. Topiramate is an anti-epileptic drug that is also used as a migraine preventive. ⋯ Topiramate at 30 mg kg(-1) was able to inhibit regional cerebral blood flow changes and cortical depolarization and spreading depression in all rats, and in 8 of 13 cats. We conclude that topiramate may act on mechanisms involved in the initiation and propagation of spreading depression, and that these mechanisms may be similar to those involved in the therapeutic role.

Geometric visual illusions in microgravity during parabolic flight.
This investigation explores whether the absence of gravitational information in a microgravity environment affects the perception of several classical visual illusions based on the arrangement of horizontal and vertical lines. Because the perception of horizontal and vertical orientation changes in microgravity, our prediction was that the strength of visual illusions based on the arrangement of horizontal and vertical lines would be altered when study participants were free-floating during parabolic flight. ⋯ Because the former illusions rely more heavily on perspective cues for generating inaccurate judgments of depth and size, these results suggest an alteration in the role of linear perspective for three-dimensional vision in microgravity. They also confirm that the visual system normally relies on otolith and somatosensory information for providing accurate judgments about the size and distance of objects when presented with planar presentations of geometric figures.

TRPA1 and TRPM8 activation in humans: effects of cinnamaldehyde and menthol.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychophysical effects of both TRPA1 and TRPM8 activation in humans by application of either cinnamaldehyde or menthol. We applied 10% cinnamaldehyde or 40% menthol solutions on the forearm in 10 study participants. ⋯ In contrast, TRPM8 activation by menthol produced no axon reflex reaction and resulted in cold hyperalgesia. We conclude that agonists of TRPA1 and TRPM8 channels produce strikingly different psychophysical patterns.

Recently, we showed that binocularly deprived cats are not able to detect global motion in a random dot pattern (Burnat et al., 2002). Here, we examined, in these animals, a global form discrimination task, that is, distinction of a square from a rectangle, matched for total surface. ⋯ We therefore conclude that binocularly-deprived cats do not attend to the global form of the stimuli. Instead, they spontaneously choose a local cue to discriminate and are not able to modify it.
