Alcohol, tobacco and illicit substances in music videos: a content analysis of prevalence and genre.
Content analyses examined mention of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit substances in music videos (n = 359) broadcast in 2001, as well as genre and presence of humor. Findings indicated that references to illicit substances were more prevalent than tobacco in music videos. Humor was 2.5 times as likely to appear in videos containing references to substances than those without substances.

To evaluate emotional and behavioral outcomes in adolescents who in early childhood were treated for mild developmental deficits; and to identify predictive factors in early childhood, for future emotional and social competence abnormalities. ⋯ The perception of parents and children with minor developmental deficits observed in early childhood regarding their emotional and social competence during adolescence is similar to typical youths.

What do adolescents want? An exploratory study regarding end-of-life decision-making.
To explore whether differences exist between chronically ill and healthy adolescents with regard to their attitudes about end-of-life (EOL) issues. ⋯ Even teenagers without chronic illness have thoughts about end-of-life issues and have opinions remarkably similar to those of chronically ill teens. Those who are chronically ill are less likely to wish to discuss EOL issues early in their illness.

Measuring sexual orientation in adolescent health surveys: evaluation of eight school-based surveys.
To examine the performance of various items measuring sexual orientation within 8 school-based adolescent health surveys in the United States and Canada from 1986 through 1999. ⋯ Specific recommendations include standardizing wording across future surveys, and pilot testing items with diverse ages and ethnic groups of teens before use. All three dimensions of orientation should be assessed where possible; when limited to single items, sexual attraction may be the best choice. Specific wording suggestions are offered for future surveys.

To determine: (a) the prevalence of physical fighting while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and (b) the associations among demographic factors, other risk behaviors, and physical fighting while under the influence of substances. ⋯ A significant proportion of adolescents who use substances also engage in physical fighting while under the influence. Health providers should counsel their patients about the potential for injury and be mindful that concurrent fighting and substance use may be markers for other more high-risk delinquent behaviors.
