Intentional injuries among the young: presentation to emergency rooms, hospitalization, and death in Israel.
To study the incidence and outcome of intentional injuries requiring emergency room (ER) care among children and adolescents in a national sample. ⋯ Adolescents aged 10 years and older are at higher risk for intentional injuries than younger children. The ethnic differences evident in this study, especially for attempted and completed suicide, may be real or the result of differential disclosure of information owing to sociocultural norms or differential recording by health professionals.

To identify factors associated with an increased prevalence of assault-related firearm injuries in male adolescents. ⋯ These results suggest that involvement in substance use and/or the criminal justice system is associated with an increased risk of firearm injuries in male adolescents, and that an increased level of involvement in the juvenile justice system is associated with a concomitant increase in firearm injuries.

To determine whether, compared with age- and sex-matched controls who did not commit suicide, adolescents who committed suicide by firearms were more likely to have had household access to firearms (after adjusting for significant risk factors for adolescent suicide). ⋯ Two types of public health interventions to prevent adolescent firearm suicides are likely to be successful: (a) limiting household access to firearms, and (b) identifying adolescents at high risk of firearm suicide.

Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign bone tumor that may mimic an orthopedic infection. Characteristic clinical features include specific radiographic findings, predilection for the adolescent age group, and long bone epiphyseal involvement. This case of chondroblastoma is unusual because of aggressive findings on radiographic studies which underscore the need to obtain hip radiographs on adolescent patients with knee pain.
