Tricuspid annular motion as a predictor of severe right ventricular failure after left ventricular assist device implantation.
Right ventricular (RV) failure after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. We sought to determine pre-operative right heart echocardiographic predictors of post-LVAD severe RV failure. ⋯ Tricuspid annular motion is a predictor of post-LVAD RV failure. Using tricuspid annular motion in addition to conventional criteria may aid in early identification of patients with prolonged inotropic support or severe RV failure and allow for better pre-operative planning.

Case ReportsNative lung-sparing lobar transplantation for pulmonary emphysema.
The living-donor lobar lung transplantation procedure has been developed clinically as an alternative approach for patients considered too ill to await cadaveric transplantation. With this procedure, 2 lobes are implanted in the recipient in place of whole right and left lungs, respectively. ⋯ In an attempt to solve this problem, we have developed a native lobe-preserving lobar transplant technique using a large animal model. We report a first successful case of a patient undergoing native lobe-preserving lobar lung transplantation for severe pulmonary emphysema.
