Super-resolutionreconstruction (SRR) can be used to reconstruct 3-dimensional (3D) high-resolution (HR) volume from several 2-dimensional (2D) low-resolution (LR) stacks of MRI slices. The purpose is to compare lengthy 2D T2-weighted HR image acquisition of neonatal subjects with 3D SRR from several LR stacks in terms of image quality for clinical and morphometric assessments. ⋯ Qualitative and quantitative assessments showed that 3D SRR of several LR images produces images that are of comparable quality to standard 2D HR image acquisition for healthy neonatal imaging without loss of anatomical details with similar edge definition allowing the detection of fine anatomical structures and permitting comparable morphometric measurement.

Ischemic diffusion-weighted imaging-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (DWI-FLAIR) mismatch may be useful in guiding acute stroke treatment decisions given its relationship to onset time and parenchymal viability; however, it relies on subjective grading. Radiomics is an emerging image quantification methodology that may objectively represent continuous image characteristics. We propose a novel radiomics approach to characterize DWI-FLAIR mismatch. ⋯ Radiomics can describe DWI-FLAIR mismatch and may provide objective, continuous biomarkers for infarct evolution using clinical-grade images. These novel biomarkers may prove useful for treatment decisions and future research.

Treatment of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is central to neurocritical care, but not all patients are eligible for invasive ICP-monitoring. A promising noninvasive option is ultrasound measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD). However, meta-analyses of ONSD for elevated ICP show wide confidence intervals. This might be due to baseline variations, inter-rater variability, and varying measurement methods. No standardized protocol has been validated. Corrections for eyeball diameter (ED) and optic nerve diameter (OND) may compensate for baseline variations. We evaluated a protocol and compared two different measurement methods for ONSD ultrasound. ⋯ ONSD can be measured with an excellent inter- and intra-rater reliability and low risk of inter-rater bias, when using this protocol. ONSDext yields a higher inter- and intra-rater reliability than ONSDint. Corrections for ED and OND can be performed reliably.

The main radiological finding in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is reduced midbrain volume. Both qualitative (e.g., hummingbird sign) and quantitative (e.g., area measurements) markers have been noted. Recent studies have shown a similar reduction also in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). The purpose was to investigate the reliability and accuracy of these markers in discriminating PSP from iNPH and controls. ⋯ Measuring sagittal midbrain area is more accurate and reliable than visual assessment. Due to significant overlap in appearance, a midbrain with a hummingbird sign or reduced sagittal area should raise the suspicion of PSP only after other signs of iNPH have been considered.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), where neurodegeneration is not as considerable, thereby potentially increasing the effect of treatments. Therefore, highly sensitive and specific classification of subjects with MCI is necessary, where various MRI modalities have displayed promise. ⋯ This study highlights the potential of diffusion MRI in differentiating MCI from HC and AD. However, the results need to be interpreted with caution as sample size and artifacts in the MRI data probably influenced the results.
