A male 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier dog with unilateral cryptorchism was presented for investigation of reduced appetite and multifocal alopecia. Abdominal sonography and radiography demonstrated abnormal enlargement of left testicle in abdominal cavity. Both of the retroperitoneal cryptorchid testicle and the other contralateral testicle were removed surgically. ⋯ Histopathologically, the retroperitoneal cryptorchid testicle was diagnosed as seminoma. We thought that hyperesterogenemia and alopecia in this case was probably related with his seminoma, although high correlations between Sertoli cell tumor and alopecia have been reported. To our knowledge, this report may be a rare case of seminoma with hyperesterogenemia and alopecia.

A spontaneous pleural mesothelioma was observed in a 4-year-old female woodchuck (Marmota monax). At necropsy, multifocal, tan to white, firm discrete nodules, 2 to 40 mm in diameter, were scattered over the ventral parts of the lungs and their corresponding parts of the diaphragm and the thoracic wall. ⋯ Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were positive for both vimentin and cytokeratin, indicating mesothelial origin. This report represents, as far as we know, the first reported case of a spontaneous mesothelioma in woodchucks.

A comparative study of the effects of glycerol and hydroxyethyl starch in canine red blood cell cryopreservation.
Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is a nonpenetrating extracellular cryoprotectant. In contrast to glycerol, it does not require labor-intensive removal from thawed red blood cells (RBCs) prior to transfusion. In this study, we compared glycerol and HES, and assessed HES as a substitute for glycerol in cryopreserved canine RBCs. ⋯ These parameters resemble the results of RBCs frozen in a 20% (w/v) glycerol solution, which are 24.7 +/- 5.2%, 99.2 +/- 0.1%, and 0.485 +/- 0.023% NaCl respectively. From a morphological point of view, 12.5% (w/v) HES showed the best cryoprotection of RBCs compared to the other concentrations of HES. These results suggest that HES could be a possible substitute for glycerol for the cryopreservation of canine RBCs.

To assess the clinical usability of propofol-ketamine anesthesia for internal fixation of fractures in racehorses, hemodynamics, blood pH and gases, and vital responses to the continuous intravenous anesthesia in 7 surgical cases were analyzed. The quality of induction with propofol was variable for individual horses. ⋯ Mean time from the end of anesthesia to standing up was prolonged, however recovery from anesthesia was calm and smooth in all cases. Propofol-ketamine anesthesia may be a clinically usable technique for internal fixation of fractures in racehorses, however induction with propofol alone is not recommended.

Comparative Study
Sodium iodoacetate-induced experimental osteoarthritis and associated pain model in rats.
Degenerative lesions were induced in the knee joint of Wistar rats by intraarticular injection of chondrocyte metabolism inhibitor mono-iodoacetate (MIA) at doses of 0, 0.3 or 3 mg/joint. Histopathological examination and the measurement of hind paw weight ratio as an index of joint pain by incapacitance tester were performed. ⋯ The clinical scores of the joint pain were closely correlated to the grade of histological findings. We conclude that the present experimental model in combination with a novel dual channel weight averager would be very useful for the study of human OA, and could be applied for estimation of therapeutic effect of new anti-OA drugs.
