Comparative StudyAxonal tracing of the normal and regenerating visual pathway of mouse, rat, frog, and fish using manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI).
To assess optic nerve (ON) regeneration after injury by applying manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) in a study of comparative physiology between nonregenerating rat and mouse species and regenerating frog and fish species. ⋯ Taken together, these results demonstrate that MEMRI is a viable method for serial, in vivo monitoring of normal, induced, and spontaneously regenerating optic nerve axons in different species.

To compare diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and magnetic resonance (MR) volumetry for predicting treatment outcomes of locally advanced rectal cancers with preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). ⋯ Early tumor volume reduction rate at the second week after CRT initiation may be a better indicator than DWI based on the mean ADC measurements for predicting CRT treatment outcome.

Comparative StudyThree-dimensional flow-independent balanced steady-state free precession vessel wall MRI of the popliteal artery: preliminary experience and comparison with flow-dependent black-blood techniques.
To examine the feasibility of flow-independent T2-prepared inversion recovery (T2IR) black-blood (BB) magnetization preparation for three-dimensional (3D) balanced steady-state free precession (SSFP) vessel wall MRI of the popliteal artery, and to evaluate its performance relative to flow-dependent double inversion recovery (DIR), spatial presaturation (SPSAT), and motion-sensitizing magnetization preparation (MSPREP) BB techniques in healthy volunteers. ⋯ The feasibility of 3D SSFP imaging of the popliteal vessel wall using flow-independent T2IR was demonstrated with effective blood suppression and good vessel wall visualization. Although DIR and SPSAT are effective for thin slab imaging, MSPREP and T2IR are better suited for 3D thick slab imaging.

To evaluate the effects of drift in scanner hardware and inter-scanner variability on global and regional brain volume changes using longitudinal data obtained on two scanners of the exact same model. ⋯ Even with scanners of the exact same model, scanner drift, and inter-scanner variability can cancel out actual longitudinal brain volume change. SIENA, which corrects for differences in imaging geometry using the outer skull surface for both time points, can reduce the effects of scanner drift and inter-scanner variability on longitudinal morphometric results.

Comparative StudyComparison of gadoxetic acid-enhanced dynamic imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging for the preoperative evaluation of colorectal liver metastases.
To retrospectively compare the diagnostic accuracy for the detection of colorectal liver metastases between gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI (EOB-MRI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) on 3.0 Tesla (T) system, and then to determine whether a combination of the two techniques may improve the diagnostic performance. ⋯ EOB-MRI was more useful for the detection of colorectal liver metastases, while DWI was more useful for their characterization. The combination of EOB-MRI and DWI showed significantly higher accuracy and sensitivity for the preoperative detection of small colorectal liver metastases than DWI.
