Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, pain worse as the bladder fills and improved after emptying. These features might suggest abnormal autonomic bladder control mechanisms. We compared the structural integrity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in IC/BPS and control subjects. ⋯ The findings show no structural ANS abnormalities in IC/BPS subjects. Higher baseline HR supports the concept of functional rather than structural change in the ANS, such as abnormality of sympathetic/parasympathetic balance that will require further evaluation.

Effect of lowering or restricting sympathectomy levels on compensatory sweating.
There is controversy on whether lowering or restricting the level of sympathectomy can reduce compensatory sweating (CS). This study compared the results from sympathectomies performed to treat severe palmar hyperhidrosis using two distinct levels of T2-4 and T3-4. ⋯ The issue of whether lowering or restricting the level of sympathectomy reduces CS is controversial and needs more supportive evidence. Age may be a predictive factor for severe CS at 6 and 12 months of follow-up. Severe CS is the only known factor that affects patient satisfaction, and family history may also be associated with patient satisfaction.

Normothermic central hypovolemia tolerance reflects hyperthermic tolerance.
To test the hypothesis that those who are highly tolerant to lower body negative pressure (LBNP) while normothermic are also highly tolerant to this challenge while hyperthermic. ⋯ LBNP tolerance while hyperthermic is related to normothermic tolerance and, associated with this finding, those who have a high LBNP tolerance while normothermic remain relatively tolerant when hyperthermic.

To describe and review autonomic complications of lightning strike. ⋯ The combination of persistent sinus tachycardia and episodic exacerbations associated with hypertension, diaphoresis, and agitation was highly suggestive of a central hyperadrenergic state with superimposed autonomic storms. Whether the additional PTSD and functional neurologic deficits were due to a direct effect of the lightning strike on the central nervous system or a secondary response is open to speculation.

Post-reperfusion syndrome (PRS), severe hypotension after graft reperfusion during liver transplantation, is an adverse clinical event associated with poorer patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether alterations in autonomic control in liver transplant recipients prior to graft reperfusion are associated with the subsequent development of PRS. ⋯ Low LF/HF and SBP measured before hepatic graft reperfusion were significantly correlated with subsequent PRS occurrence, suggesting that sympathovagal imbalance and depressed SBP may be key factors predisposing to reperfusion-related severe hypotension in liver transplant recipients.
